i bought one of those ceramic dishes for their food, which i filled up. they have ate quite alot of it, so should i fill it up a bit more. i have 2 male rats that are 12 weeks old. these are my first ratsHow much should i feed my rats?
It is best to free feed their base diet, there is no danger of them eating too much. The only bad thing about this is if you put way too much food in the bowl they have a better chance of spoiling it by urinating on it or dumping it out into soiled bedding. Check their dish every day and eventually you'll get an idea of how much food they need. Also, a lot of rats will remove all the food from their food dish and hide it, so check for little stashes if you see the bowl is empty awfully fast!
No matter what diet you are giving them, supplement with 2-3 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, keeping in mind that a rat-sized serving is about the size of a large grape.
If your rats tend to pee in their food dish (a lot of them do this for some reason), you may want to purchase a food hopper, or a dish that hangs on the side of the cage rather than sits on the bottom. I find this helps a lot as they won't pee in it if it is off the ground most of the time.
Good luck with your rats! How much should i feed my rats?
Rats are scavengers which means they collect al lthe food they can get their little paws on, and store it away in their nests for later use. So there is no chance of over feeding or anything, they will eat when they want to. Fill the bowl, just don't give too little. Also, becareful to to add too much food if they already have some in their nests because it will just pile up and go bad. Anything that is not dry food you need to remove every evening so it doesn't go bad.
