What should I feed my new pet rats?

I just want to know an approved list of foods that my pet rats can eat. Please dont be smart and tell me to feed them garbage. I need someone who can really help. Thanks. What should I feed my new pet rats?
You should feed your rat a high quality lab block that's low in protein and fat. One of your best bets is getting Harlan blocks. You usually can't find them at a pet store, so you'll have to purchase them online. Kim's Ark sells them for a dollar a pound plus shipping. http://www.kimsarkrescue.org/content/vie鈥?/a>

Lab blocks are most nutritionally complete and should be fed everyday. They are specifically designed to feed rats used for experiments and even though it sounds bad, it's in the scientist's best interest to keep the rat as healthy as possible.

Along with the lab blocks, feeding your rats fresh veggies and fruits is good as well. Most people recommend doing that at least three times a week. Things like carrots, banana, etc are good ideas. Here's a site with what is dangerous to feed rats: http://www.fatratcentral.com/the-basics/鈥?/a>

You shouldn't feed your rat a seed diet because they are not nutritionally complete and it is easy for your rat to pick out the stuff they like (seeds, etc) and not eat everything. It's a good way for your rat to get fat. Additionally, most seed diets you find at pet stores are not specifically designed for rats including items like dried corn, that can cause stomach cancer, and alfalfa, which is indigestible to rats.

Hope that helps! What should I feed my new pet rats?
NEVER feed seeds even if it does say rat food. they will still be able to just eat the fatty ones.....

giving them lab blocks doesnt mean you are safe, alot of lab blocks are full of fillers like corn which rats can't digest and they will get skinny after eating these for long..

so the key is to buy a HIGH QUALITY lab block. Harlan is the way to go, which you can't find in petstores so you may order offline like another user suggested. but if you can't, feed oxbow regal rat or even easier a high quality senior dog food. try wellness, or nutro if you can't afford wellness. my rats like nutro better, and it's fine for them . easier to find then special lab blocks too. the first ingredient says chicken, or chicken meal which is great because rats are carnivores.

along side your oxbow regal rat or choice of dog food, i would make a cereal mix of:

total [cereal with lots of vitamins], dry rolled oats, dried cranberries, banana chips, multi colored rotini, cheerios, shredded wheats and wheat bix. you can find all this at the grocery store.

the most important is the oxbow, harlan or dog food. but cereal mix is the best for giving them variety and it stimulates their minds, as in they get excited looking through it and it also helps them to eat more because they're not bored of the food. how would you like to eat the same thing every day?

trust me!!!! And the other person that said harlan, your rat will be happier and healthier and live longer.
I think they eat the same thing as hamsters do. This can vary from hamster food (you can buy this at any local pet store such as pets mart) . You can also start feeding them vegetables such as celery, cucumber and lettuce. Maybe some milk as well. and actually feeding them garbage (left overs) actually is a good idea! just nothing unhealthy or anything that has gone bad.

Hope it helps!

well rats eat almost anthing, but thats in the wild.

well you can start by simply giving them rat food which is sold at the stores

also they like to eat peanuts(unsalted)

well they like almost everything humans like.

check this webpage http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bclee/rat鈥?/a>
Go to your local pet store and they should have a food just for rats. You can also make your own. I fed mine corn, sunflower seeds, safflower seeds, unsalted peanuts, and dog food. There are other things you can mix in as well. You can also get vitamins and other supplements as well.
i feed my rats veges and left over food, oats, rats and mice mix, and other treats i use yogurt drops to train them

why don't you look up that sort of stuff

you will find help in some forums about looking after rats

other this rats like space,to play, attention (recommend getting a litter pair), and like to be at human level, can be trained, even litter trained
To get the proper nutrition you should get them lab blocks.

That way they can't pick through the food, and eat only the fatty foods.

I feed my rats lab blocks and they are happy and healthy.

Hamster food is not smart because they will only pick out the foods they like.
Hey, im not sure but i do know that if you call the vet or go to the pet store (the vet would be more promising as for the store would just want your money) and they should be able to tell you something good for rats. The vet may not know whatbrand but they shold be able to tell you some supplements that rats need.

hope i helped!
