Can you have a pair of male rats together in the same cage???

Just wondering if you could have a pair of male rats in the same cage together with them hurting each other.

Because I heard you can't have a pair of male rats in a cage together. }:(Can you have a pair of male rats together in the same cage???
YES. Rats should be kept in pairs, and most rats get along with others. Males typically get along spendidly with each other. They'll sleep together, groom each other and play-fight.

If you get the rats spearately, make sure you introduce them to each slowly and somewhere that is ';neutral'; - don't shove the new one into the old one's cage. If you get them together, they should get along fine.

Male rats sometimes get more aggressive towards puberty, but this isn't the case for all.Can you have a pair of male rats together in the same cage???
It depends. My rats came out of the same litter and I bought them together. They've been sharing a cage this whole time. There are a few disputes, but as long as they get exercise out of their cage they tend to fight very little. They're very close- always snuggling, and can even work their travel ball together.

If you do it, you may get lucky as I did. But be prepared with some money for a second cage if you need it.
its a better to put them in together from babies

they might fight at 1st, they do this to figure out who's boss then they should be fine

i had two male rats from babies they used to hate each other and fight but in time time they grow to love each other and curl up in the bed together
You most certainly can put two boys together, and you should. Rats thrive off of eachother's company. And males are actually a lot more aesy going and lazy than females are. Just make sure that the introduction goes slow, a couple weeks usually. Check out fancy-rats.co.uk for info ... it's a forum where I learned everything I've ever needed to know about my ratties.
I used to keep two male rats in the same cage together. It's best to get them from the same litter. Or it that's not possible introduce them to each other when they're both still young.

Mine got on perfectly fine until they both died of old age. They never had a single fight, and followed each other round like puppy dogs. You should have a problem as long as their cage is big enough. Also I'd provide two beds for them, incase they want to sleep sepretly (mine never did)

Male rats get on bette rthan female rats : )
Where did you hear that? All rats should be kept with same sex pairs or they will get lonely. I don't know why people think male rats are aggressive, quite the opposite is true. Big balls of laziness is what they are.

What treats can i make 4 my rats? ( there WILL be a best answer)?

i want to make some home-made treats for my rats but i also want to make them healthy, any tips?

Also, what veggies can my rats eat?

And LASTLY, what human foods can rats eat? ie pasta and things.

Thanks. What treats can i make 4 my rats? ( there WILL be a best answer)?
Here is a link with recipies you can make for your rats.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Homemade-Rat-Tre鈥?/a>

Rats can pretty much eat anything humans can, but the food you feed them should be healthy, just like for us. These recipies are healthy and easy to make!

Rats can pretty much eat any vegetables. I feed mine carrots mostly. They seem to like those.

Have fun with these! Rats are awesome pets. Its really great that you want to take care of yours and keep them healthy =)What treats can i make 4 my rats? ( there WILL be a best answer)?
hi - rats eat most things although dont give them to many vitimins cos although this sounds weird its not allways good for there skin - they love dog buiscuits, egg the go mad after, meat they love but dont leave it in their cage for too long of they dont eat it cos obviously it goes off.

a few fun tips:

*put a bowl of water in the cage and put a few sunflower seeds in the water (with the shells on) they float and rats love getting there paws in there and fishing round for them.

*get an old toilet tissue tube and cover 1 end with a few layers of tissue - then fill the tube with a mix of food and treats - the cover the other end with tissue aswell - put it in there cage and watch them tear the holes in there to get to the food - they will love it !!!!!

good luck

  • I'm about to buy two female rats, can they live together?

I want to get two female rats, possibly at the same time (if I find two I like) or possibly at different times. What is the best way to introduce them to each other so they can live stress and fight free?I'm about to buy two female rats, can they live together?
Try and buy a young pair together since that would be easiest for you and the rats. If you buy them at the same time you wont need to introduce them and since your a new rat owner it would be better for you not to try anything to difficult. When introducing rats its important to know why they act the way they act.

I would recommend you do some research before you buy your rats so you are more informed about the care they will need.I'm about to buy two female rats, can they live together?
best way to go is to get two litter mates or rats that have been together already. but to introduce two rats take them to a neutral area such as the bath tub and let them meet. before hand clean out the cage very well with a pet odor removing solution so it doesn't smell like any particular rat. once they've had time to get to know each other place them in the cage and observe them for a day or so. rats are very social and get along extremely well with few exceptions.
definetly! :) thank you for realizing that you need to get two for them to be happy and healthy! I would suggest getting them at the same time, it would be the easiest way. If you get them seperately, introduce them on neutral grounds, i.e. in the bathtub, a couch, etc. And before you put them in the cage, scrub it and all the accesories clean to remove her smell.
    Hello,

Yes this is fine but they might tend to do a little bit of funny stuff like crawl over each other and squeak and maybe fight a little bit but that is normal. They are finding out who is boss. I hope i helped,

    Daniel
yes they are supposed to live together...i think u should do more research before you buy rats because rats need a companion.
Its fine IF they are from the same liiter if not they probley will fight alotttt
The best thing to do would be to find two that have already been housed together. Check out http://petfinder.com/

I had a dream about white rats. Can someone help me interpret?

I had a creepy dream last night. It included being chased by white rats who tried to bite me and many of them looked really thin and frail. Then all the rats started dropping dead one by one for no reason. Really weird. Can someone help me interpret this dream? Thanks in advance.I had a dream about white rats. Can someone help me interpret?
White is the symbol of innocence and purity. Rats can often be symbols for people in our lives. It appears you have some people who seem not to mean you any harm, but they really do cause issues for you. They are not very powerful, though, as they are ';thin and frail.';I had a dream about white rats. Can someone help me interpret?
A white animal symbolizes forgiveness. A dream of a rat means someone in your life cannot be trusted. That person will do anything to survive, even if it means you have to go down.
There are some quite nasty women around you, thieves who will be a source of annoyance for you temporarily and then who will leave you alone.

    Regards
I think the rats symbolize fears and bad things in your live. You are able to overcome those fears and things if you work on it. Good luck!

Did the Us Government hire Thai people during Vietnam to work as tunnel rats?

Some guy came up to me and said he worked in NKP as a tunnel rat for the US Army in Vietnam. He was old enough and spoke some English but he seemed to be hitting the lao-lao pretty hard.Did the Us Government hire Thai people during Vietnam to work as tunnel rats?
The NVA and VC did construct a lot of tunnel networks and since they were ';slightly smaller'; than most US GI's the tunnels were a little narrow in some places. It would make sense to use the smallest guy to crawl in to investigate or set some charges.

I don't remember reading or personally seeing any Thai's in the US employ for this particular job. Thai troops were in Nam but my best guess that they did their own tunnel exploring and the US did their own exploring! There were always joint type missions, I guess it would be prudent to use what ever particular resources available to get the job done.

Interesting question, right up there with Air America, Nung Guards, Biet Hai, ';Chu Hois'; and various Montagnard/Hmong forces.Did the Us Government hire Thai people during Vietnam to work as tunnel rats?
Who was hitting the lao-lao a bit too hard? Of course the Thai military had troops in Nam, but I never heard of any being tunnel rats.It could have been a good idea since they are smaller then Americans and could pass through the tunnels easier..

The only NKP I know of was the abbreviation used for the US Air Base.

Do any Rangers fans give a rats **** about the Arsenal game ?

Pre-season friendlies bore the backside off me, always have done. Good luck to anyone who made the trip south, have a great time and enjoy yourself.........but really, what do they achieve, apart from getting the players fit ?Do any Rangers fans give a rats **** about the Arsenal game ?
will enjoy watching it just because its rangers....would like to see us win because to be honest i never like to see us lose..but i certanily won't be bothered with the result as we are not playing for anything.....i mean just look at celtic beat the mighty spurs..ahem and done nowt since..aye we're feart..lolDo any Rangers fans give a rats **** about the Arsenal game ?
I don't know how the pro players manage to switch off and care so little, whenever I played wherever I played, even out in the car park with the lads at lunch time there was no such thing as a friendly.

The result doesn't mean anything but I'd still rather win. A lot of the time you also see better football, some of the stuff rangers played against psg was rather good, due to there being no pressure.

And if we beat Arsenal today the boys will have a good confidence level heading into the season. To be on a winning streak before the season begins can't hurt.
My sentiments exactly, you cant read anything in to pre season games because both teams are more concerned about getting their respective teams match fit rather than allow their important players to pick up unnecessary injuries. In saying that it gives fans a chance to see their hero's compete against quality teams that they may rarely see. Pre season friendlies are good entertainment, but in No way are they a measure of how successful your season may or not be. Cheers
I know I don't. I like friendlys though because they're good testing ground to try out players in diffrent positions or with diffrent players playing together to see what works. It's good to get the players fit though. You just know celtic will be knacked by the time season kicks off.

If we win , we win. We draw , we draw, lose, oh well we lose but at the end of the day i won't cry myself to sleep worring that the almighty celtic might win this year because we couldn't beat arsenal in a friendly
Ah bricking it like your manager we will play our 1st team because we want a trophy tony mowbray plays a reserve team and wins a trophy the european champions and tottenham were trying to win while you are trying to win a trophy that a team that will be luckey to get into the top 6 this season who are also playing there reserve team So use are bricking it because you know use are going to get ran over just play negetive football like lional messi sed use can only play negative football oh and rember and sing ur sectarian songs because without them arsenal might not know who you are.
I like friendlies as they help get the players match fit for the comming season the only downside is if one of the regular players gets injured. All games whether pre season or not are important and don't kid yourself Paratus, you want Rangers to beat the mighty Arsenal. Arsenal are a scalp on your belt.
I don't like to see my team get beaten in any competition even a friendly while the result isn't the big thing its the performance and the players coming through injury free but u loose friendlies the morale goes out the window so in short to the players the friendlies are important and if they are important to them they are important to me
    listen tae rico the freako

whits up son, uv nae hope this season , the writings on the wall, if u could take ur tinted specs aff for a minute ul have noticed that. ur strikers couldnae score in a barrel o f@nnys.

fvck friendlys, bring on the real stuff

    52 in the bag * * * * * 53 on its way
I'm interested in the game though the result is less important than the players coming through injury-free. Saw some good things from Rangers today against PSG but am not putting any great stock in the score other than it is always nicer to win than to lose....friendly or not.
I just want to see my team win, whether its the champions league or beating the champions of arran lol.

Lucky for me im a gers fan so i get to watch my team win on a regular basis :D
Judging by the way the Celtic fans celebrated when they beat Tottenham last week a friendly win over a prem team is like winning the Champions League to the old firm
HO MR DOOM AND GLOOM FEETBALL IS A SPORT SO ITS GOOD TE WATCH
It's good to see Rangers win any game, but i'm not a fan of friendlies either. There's no edge to it.
I';m sure the players will feel there';s no challenge involved.

    They are just getting fit.
u hit it on the head friendlies r to get the players match fit thats all it wasnt even scotland verses england as arsenal had only i englishman playing for them
I think Rico pretty much nailed it Billy. Make yer mind up.
its only a freindly it gets them fit and maybe win another cup
a pi55 up at the same time,it be the only time they get a good excuse to *** to london
    aye !!!!!!!!!!! i dae !!!!!!!!!!

every game the bears play in i want them to win

    friendly or not
still want them to win but its not the end of the world if they dont

How to befreind my new baby rats?

I have just bought my first pair of female rats. and I want to know how is the best way to get them comfortable with me.

I have put their cage in an area where I am alot and have been resting my hand in their cage so they can sniff it sometimes with goodies for them sometimes without. are there any other ideas? How to befreind my new baby rats?
You are already doing what I was going to suggest. :) Just keep up with the hand thing (heck, pop a movie in and watch it with your hand in the cage), and talk to them a lot. After they get comfortable on your hand, start lifting it and putting it back down in small increments until they don't care that their seat just turned into a flying carpet.

They'll learn pretty quickly. Congrats on your new babies! How to befreind my new baby rats?
i will be going through this myself shortly as i am hoping to adopt 3 rats from my local rescue.

i would definately suggest that you are doing the right thing already. i think i will also try adding an old t-shirt or something that i have worn to the cage so that the rats can have a good sniff and get used to my smell. some people carry their rats around in a bum bag or similar filled with bedding so that the rats again can get used to your smell and therefore build a bond. i think offering treats by hand is a good step - food is always good in building trust and friendship.
Take them shopping with you, to the Mall maybe!

How/When do (female) pet rats mature?

I have a female rat, approximately five months old, and she's very high-strung. We get along well; she rides on my shoulders, follows me around, and loves to play. But she won't let me hold her. She's too restless and always wants to be moving. She's a good pet, but she can't sit still. She's still just a baby, could her restlessness and need to be running around and getting into everything just be a young rat phase? Is this normal?How/When do (female) pet rats mature?
Well female rats are more active and playful then males. But yes, this is just a phase. One of my babies, (she will be a year old in February) use to be so hyper all the time, she use to run around and popcorn but now shes a lap rat. She rarely has bursts of energy anymore. Enjoy it while it lasts, they grow up so fast!How/When do (female) pet rats mature?
Rats physically mature around 8 months of age.

This behavior is very common in females. They're always on the go and getting into everything. Some will calm down when they get older but the males are more of the cuddlers.

Also, is she the only rat you have? Rats are very social creatures and should always be kept in same sex pairs. Lone rats can become very depressed and even go as far as harming themselves out of loneliness. Her behavior could be a result of this. Try getting her a female friend and see if she calms down. She'll have someone to get rid of all that energy with.

    Good luck!
if you can get your female to calm down tell me your secret cause all of my girls are insanely mobile and crazy lol. it's a female thing really. think about it, female rats are like female humans us girls rather be social butterflies, move around and are always inquisitive as were males in both human and rodent forms are slower, tend to do what needs to be done and then plop down and vegetate!
yeah... I am still waiting for that myself after a year... lol... males are known to be more cuddly than the females... I suggest to try to get her to calm down, I take my laptop and put it on my lap, and let them crawl under it, or put a blanket over my lap and let them play while I read a book or something... it gives them a warm dark place to play, and associates saftey with your smell... so she might calm down... we do have it though, that if they girls are running on the bed, and we touch them, they stop and let you pick them up for a few seconds... then want to play again.
    Hey Moriah,

Yes this is normal for female rats. My three females are all exactly like that, they like to be on the move (they are 9 months old). This is not so much of a young rat thing as a female rat thing. Males are much more content to sit on your lap, females like to see what is going on out there!

    Hope I helped

    Andy D.

    P.S.

Some females calm down with time.
THIS IS COMPLETLY NORMAL REMEMBER WHEN YOU WHERE 5? :)

  • If i had 2 male rats in one cage and two females in another could i bring them together to breed then seperate?

back into the male cgae and female cage, and then the females can give birth together or 1 male rat farthers boths females ?If i had 2 male rats in one cage and two females in another could i bring them together to breed then seperate?
Just remember - rats can have a lot of babies. My rat had 13 babies! So if your 2 female rats has 13 babies each that's 26 baby rats!! A lot to handle and you would more cages, plus the babies can become pregnant at 5 weeks old. You would need to be able tell the sex of them and separate the boys and girls at 5 week old. Its a lot of hard work!If i had 2 male rats in one cage and two females in another could i bring them together to breed then seperate?
    Yes you can do that.

What did Skinner do with rats and pigeons?

I cant find a simple and summed up explanation of what the psychologist B. F Skinner did with rats and pigeons.

Does anyone know because i would be extremely grateful if they could give me a quick summary that tells me exactly what i need to know in simple terms. What did Skinner do with rats and pigeons?
Skinner invited a device called Skinner's Box. It was an operant conditioning chamber. He would put the rats or pigeons inside the box. There would be switches inside the box and whenever the animals touched a specific one, food would dispense. By using this method he taught the animals to walk in a certain pattern. What did Skinner do with rats and pigeons?
Skinner built on the behaviorist theories of Ivan Pavlov and John Watson as he studied the connection between stimuli and observable behavior in rats, which led to his eponymous Skinner box. With its levers and food pellets, the box allowed precise measurement and control of experimental conditions.

Skinner received his PhD from Harvard University in 1931 and spent several years at the University of Minnesota and the University of Indiana, but he returned to Harvard in 1948, remaining there for the rest of his career. During World War II, Skinner convinced the military to fund his research--the famous Project Pigeon--to train pigeons to guide bombs and torpedoes. Skinner favored pigeons over rats because they live longer and he found them easier to train and handle.

Skinner's animal research underscored the importance of consequences (i.e., rewards or punishments), and of breaking tasks into smaller parts and rewarding success on these small parts, in creating behavior change.

He believed the methods could be used to train humans--by presenting new subject matter in a series of graduated steps with feedback at each step. Modern computer-based instructional methods are based on his findings.

    look up BF skinner..

he did operant conditioning, conditioning behavior. he taught the rats and the pigeons to do what he wanted by constantly reinforcing their behaviors.
Operant conditioning. Look it up and you will find out far more than I can type here.

What type of small pet should i get if i fear mice, rats, and any type of rodent?

i am looking to buy a a small pet i already have 3 dogs wich are harmless and my family wants small pet like a reptile or like a bunnyWhat type of small pet should i get if i fear mice, rats, and any type of rodent?
    Hi, shouldn't you question be:

If i fear mice, rats, and any type of rodent, and I already have three dogs, what on earth am I trying to prove and to whom?

Animals aren't just something that one buys so that you can have some dubious status in owning them unless you are in a tribal situation where the number of pigs etc declares your status.

They are living creatures with brains and the ability to suffer pain, neglect etc so don't just buy one to add to your collection unless you can give it undivided care and attention.

Perhaps a fish tank with exotic fish might suit! What type of small pet should i get if i fear mice, rats, and any type of rodent?
An ornate box turtle stays small, don't need much and with mine I take it outside with me to roam around and in the winter I take it out of its tank and leave it roam around my computer room when I am in there. Here is two sites that you can read abut them and other reptiles. www.austinsturtlepage.com and exotic pets under reptiles.
Any terrier will do... I have a yorkie/poodle and she loves to chase anything moving (including toes)... but they would be ideal for chasing down any critters that may freak you out. But don't get an animal just for that reason... just let that be a perk!
buy a bunny i have lots and i am breeding them. They are not rodents and they love to be held and snuggled. They are great with dogs but my dogs chase them so i wouldn't let them out together.
Well you could get a bird, ferret's, bunny, chinchilla, iguana, there are many that you could get. What do you like??? That's the question
Maybe a ferret.....I used to have 2 of them - unfortunately my neighbor left my door open and they escaped=-( They are really amusing little animals.
Sound like you need a cat, to keep the rats away.
u can get a teacup terrior such as a yorkie they are much smaller than the regualr sized yorkies and they dont have to be walked so much
Rabbits are very nice pets, but they require more work than any other ';pocket'; pets
get a chihuahua or maybe a chupacabra

I just moved into an old farm house that I have discovered is inhabited my mice and I think rats HELP?

I am strapped for cash and exterminators cost alot so trying to do this on my own for now....I just moved into an old farm house that I have discovered is inhabited my mice and I think rats HELP?
Yoy need to do a couple of things. get traps and put them in cupboards and by base boards especially where you see signs of vermin such as dropping, chewed flooring, baseboards etc., nest materials, etc., etc..

I find peanut butter is about the best bait there is.

Cats are good defense against rats and mice but you will have to allow them on counters and table tops as well as in cupboards in order to do their job. Many people would have a problem with this. Poisons are effective but if you have cats you could poison them if they eat a poisoned mouse or rat (this is also true of wildlife-if a hawk or other animal eats a poisoned rat they will get sick and probably die). So I stay away from poison baits. not to mention if you have kids or pets they can and do get into such things and get very sick.

You need to check the perimeter of your house for holes that a mouse or rat can get through. Rats can get through a hole the size of a quarter, mice can get through smaller openings. Any you find you can temporarily block using steel wool-just stuff it into the hole. They cannot chew through it and if they try they get a tummy ache. permanent solutions would be cover all holes with a material they cannot chew through such as metal. if you don't do this step the rats and mice will continue to come into your house all year round and you will never be able to get them under control. This is VERY IMPORTANT

It is not expensive to control vermin in your house-you should spend no more than $50 (mostly for traps). But it will take you most of a day to secure the house from invading forces (which this is the time of year these critters want to come inside and use your heat and food to get through winter). And you will have to set and empty traps dailyI just moved into an old farm house that I have discovered is inhabited my mice and I think rats HELP?
Traps and poison. Studies have shown that while cats and dogs are excellent for preventing infestations, they do little for a house that is already infested, and cat and dog food is especially good food for rats and mice as well. You will find that with winter coming on more and more pests will be coming inside so your best defense is to try to locate their entrance holes and block them. In the case of vents cover them with hardware cloth, wire mesh, not regular screen. A rat can and will chew a hole through window screen in a few minutes. Check around drains and pipes, holes in roof soffits, vents or siding. A rat can squeeze through a pretty small hole and, of course, a mouse can take advantage of an even smaller entrance.
    Hi Big Mac

Contact Cats Protection and give a home to some rescue cats. They will ensure the rodent problem is addressed. It would be nice having moggies around your old farm house.

    Good luck and best wishes.
I have found that well placed moth balls work pretty well. Put 1 or 2 near every opening (small hole) along the wall and floor line. Even right inside the holes.

The down side is, moth balls stink.
You need cats to get rid of the rats.

Is it normal for my rats to hate me?

I bought these two blue rats about a month ago and they're supposed to be very friendly and love humans, but they hate me. I change their food and water daily and I clean their cage weekly. I do everything I'm supposed to do and yet they do everything they can to avoid being touched by me. What am I doing wrong? Is it normal for my rats to hate me?
Your rats don't hate you. They are scared of you. You need to socialize them more. Spend hours with them, playing talking, offering healthy treats like bananas, grapes and such.

Keep working on them, you'll see, they will soon bond to you if you socialize them. Rats are the best pets!Is it normal for my rats to hate me?
one of my rats bit me up...well i have two snakes guess what she never bit my again but my other rat love me shes very smart
This was the very first question I ever posted

I know EXACTLY what you're on about

But I learned, don't worry! They become used to you but it does take a long time for some. Especially with two.

Keep doing what you're doing ! It will work. Don't worry. :)

    xx xx xx
Wow that sucks. I've never had that problem with a rat. In fact my two girls will travel from one side of their cage to the other as I walk by for attention. They sit pathetically staring at me waiting for me to come over and play with them.
It's because they are proably not tame.
What I think you have to do is ';Trust Training';.

Basically, get a few spoonfulls of yoghurt, and try to lure them onto your hand. At first, they won't bother, but vanilla yoghurt has a very strong smell, to they'll come over for a few licks and run off. after a few days, they'll come onto your hand. Keep trying until they aren't afraid to came over! I tried this with my ratties and after a week they're willing to sit on my shoulder! Also, here are some links that elaborate on ';Trust Training'; and other things that'll help!

It's natural for your animals to be afraid of you. It's only been a month, give it time. Trust must be earned. It also depends on the age of the animals. It will take lots of interaction and patience to gain their trust. But the rewards are worth it, so don't give up! Good Luck!

How do i keep my rats protein level down?

how do i keep my rats protein level down? what kind of foods should i feed her %26amp; what should i not? we feed her a rat mix from the pet shop which is left in her cage in a bowl so whenever shes hungry she can eat. I always give her fresh vegetables %26amp; bits of fruit every couple days, some bread %26amp; cheese occasionally and some yogurt treats every so often. How do i keep my rats protein level down?
Find out what has a lot of protein, and don't feed that.

    Read labels on prepared mixes.

    Hint:

Nuts and dairy products have lots of protein.

How do i keep my rats protein level down?
I just answered a similar question and here was my answer. Here's a little advice. Stay away from any foods that contain ethoxyquin as an ingredient. This is a preservative for vitamins, but also used for rubber. It's known to cause tumors in rodents by experienced owners and breeders. Also watch the protein% in your foods. Rats are particularly susceptible to this and can itch, get hot spots and even worse things. Another problem with some store bought mixes is, that your animal will only eat certain things making it hard to control the protein %. You should also know what foods are dangerous for your animals. Here's a couple links to help you. The first is a great proven homemade diet(always the best) that is very affordable. The second link is a list of bad foods to stay away from. Good luck!

The rat food commonly found in pet stores can actually be rather unhealthy and unbalanced for rats (hamsters, rats, and mice all eat different things, so a food that says it is good for all of them is wrong). 'Seed mixes' usually end up being a waste of money, as a lot of rats will only eat some, and not all of it, resulting in a nutrient deficiency and money wasted on uneaten food.

Rat's diets should actually be very similar to our own, assuming however that you are eating a well balanced and healthy diet :) (low protein, rats don't need dairy, but they do love yogurt, high in healhty grains, vegetables, and fruits).

Check out suebee's mix here: http://www.ratsrule.com/diet.html

This is something you make yourself from items at the grocery store, not something you order (although some sites will do that for you).

You can also add high quality lab blocks such as Harlan-Teklad, and if this is not an option, a low calorie/fat, low protein (low protein is important!), dog food. I'd recommend the low-calorie (light blue) Natural Balance dog food, or if that is unavailable, Nutro Natural Choice Lite dog food.

Cat food should never be an option except for nursing mothers, as the protein content is way too high, and can cause health problems (for reference, protein % should be below 15 % in a dog food, or lab block).

I hope this helped! Feel free to email me if you have any more questions. Also check out the forum I posted in the links below, where there are members willing to help you with any questions you may have in the future :)

  • I dreamt of two black bird that changed in to two black rats, what does it mean?

The two black birds were standing on the ground together and a gush of water came, one of the black birds got sucked down head first in to a plug hole so I pulled him out. When I pulled him out they both turned in to black rats and the one I rescued curled up on the top of my hand. What does it mean?I dreamt of two black bird that changed in to two black rats, what does it mean?
I think you helped someone out recently and they didn't show appreciation so you didn't think they deserved it. Since, then, however, this person you helped has shown himself to be vulnerable and less dangerous than you thought.I dreamt of two black bird that changed in to two black rats, what does it mean?
this means that you have been taken over by a demon.

you must consult a priest to exorcise you.
It means you like nasty animals. Start washing your hands more.

How much are pet male rats and how much is it to get them neutured?

how much are pet male rats and how much is it to get them neutured? How much are pet male rats and how much is it to get them neutured?
completely depends where you liveHow much are pet male rats and how much is it to get them neutured?
well where i life the rat is about 10拢 20拢
They cost anywhere from $5-$25 depending on where you get them. To have them neutered it should be in the ball park of $150. Also, they should not be neutered before 6 weeks of age.
depends where you get your pet rat from pet stores around $10, rescues anywhere from $5 to $15.

to get them neutered it also depends where you go for my male it cost me $116 including the meds. some vets will neuter between 5 weeks and up and some will wait 3 months and so on, you have to call around.

also be sure your vet knows what hes doing and has done it before it helps.

    good luck.
Pet rats cost somewhere between $5-$15. though there are other costs associated with owning rats. You will need a good sized cage, each rat needs 2 cubic feet of space cages costs some where between 50$-100$, You will probably want to spend another $20-$30 on accessories(food bowls, water bottles, a house, toys etc etc) Food is quite cheap, bedding is a little more expensive. You will probably end up spending something like $15-$20 a month on food and bedding.

You should also have money to spend on Vets bills, rats have a number of common health problems and at some point you are going to end up taking them to the vet.

You have asked about the cost of neutering, this would depend on your vet. however what I would say is that in 90% of the time it is completely unnecessary, I have had non of my male rats neutered and have never had problems as a result. Operations on small animals are always risky and there is a chance that they will not survive the operation. In my view it is cruel to subject and animal to unnecessary and risky surgery.

How much do female small rats usually cost at pet stores?

Like at pet co, pet smart etc. Any pet store. How much do female small rats usually cost at pet stores?
I've seen really small ones at petsmart for like $5How much do female small rats usually cost at pet stores?
First of all to all that said don't get a rat for a pet, they actually make highly intelligent and affectionate pets.

I've seen rats in my area from anywhere from 7-10 dollars, but if you go to a family owned petstore I'd get my rat there. They're generally less expensive, and healthier.

I got a pet rat from petco once and she died in one week. And this was not my fault. I fed and watered her twice a day, and cleaned out her cage twice a week.
if you have a petland around you the small ones are $4. the medium ones are between $5 and $7 i believe, and the larger ones arent that much either. they dont charge higher for females or males. all the prices range the same. i think at petsmart they might do charge more for females. but you should look up exotic petstores in your area and they will probably be the prices they are at petland..
they are really cheap they could be $5 or $10 or $15 they are super cheap and really good pets i am wanting a rat. here is a link that might help you.

Petsmart and Petco charge way too much in my opinion. It's around the $10 area. There was an exotic pet shop in my area that sold young rats for $5 and adult for $6-$7. Check around different places.
i went to pet smart and i saw fancy mice for $7 ea. if you dont wanna spend that much go to pet city i bought mine for $3 ea and they look like there healthy to me
7-15 dollars. And, ya, rats are awesome, intelligent pets.
I got my rat at a pet store,it was privately owned and she was 6.99$
They are usually $12 a piece at Pet Co.
    i dont know
get frozen ones from a reptile show. you dont want a rat for a pet.
    Why would you want that?

How do i convince my mom that hamsters aren't like sewer rats?

my mom grew up in florida where the rats and mice live in trash and sewers. i have told her that hamsters dont do that and they are from a pet store so they are clean. ive showed her pictures of really cute ones but she says they look like mice. what should i do?How do i convince my mom that hamsters aren't like sewer rats?
I can tell you right now, it'll be very hard to change her opinion. My mom and dad used to despise rodents, but then one of my friends moved to Korea and gave us his hamster. After the first 3 or 4 days, my parents were in love with him! He was sooo sweet. You could possibly drag your mother to a pet store and show her the hamsters, on the off chance that she'll like them. Really, though, hamsters are much different than rats or mice. The creatures she saw were feral, wild animals. Hamsters are domesticated and therefore have no relations to rats and mice (and other feral rodents) apart from their instincts. You could try explaining that to your mom; hopefully that would work! As a last resort, you could also explain to her that the hamster would be YOUR pet, and therefore you would take care of it, and make sure it never escapes; that way she'd never have to come in contact with it. Good luck! How do i convince my mom that hamsters aren't like sewer rats?
It might be very hard to change her opinion on hamsters, but start with subtle ideas. Maybe take her to your local petshop where you are planning on getting a hamster if your mom accepts it. The workers at the pet shops will allow you to hold the hamsters if you ask them :] If it's too much for her to handle, you can hold it instead %26amp; show her that hamsters are harmless. Inform her about hamsters on things such as what they eat, play with %26amp; tell her that hamsters are totally domesticated. good luck :]
well I had bad experiences with hampsters, but thats because mine went insane. I got one that was pregnant so she started biting everything and then when she had the babies she ate them all, but the albino ones. She was so evil. She use to be adorable, but she lost it. It was kind of sad, and then I brought her to my mums and while I went for a walk a drunk guy opened the cage and they excaped and we found the 2 babies dead, attacked by dogs and then the satanic mother is mysteriously somewhere unknown. If you advenchually convince your mother to let you have one be careful when picking it out and make sure it is far from pregnant and never can get pregnant.Good luck:)
Well for starters, how about trying the following:

#1 Cleaning your room and making sure that it STAYS clean and tidy.

#2 Making sure that your homework is done and handed in on time.

#3 Sweep the floors in the living room and kitchen without your parents asking you to.

#4 Wash and/or dry the dishes.

#5 Do not fight and argue with your sisters %26amp; brothers.

#6 Eat what you are given and don't whine or make ';yuck'; faces when given it.

#7 Don't talk rudly to adults

#8 Always share with other kids.

#9 Go to bed when you are told to.

#10 Research the pet and breed you want to be 100% certain that it is the right one for you.

    # 11 Ask them about getting this new pet in a nice way and don't beg and whine about it.

If 100% sure that if you give those a try, they will see that you are serious about wanting to add a this pet to your life and family. :)
    You should tell her the difference of what hamsters can do and why they are smarter, cleaner, and better than rats. Look up info that hamsters don't have any sickness. Or, ask her for something more scarier than the hamster or rat and say, ';What would you get mom? a venomous lizard, or a cute little hamster?';
Hamsters are very clean animals in the wild or in your home. I think that the best way to have your mom say yes is to research these animals then show your mom your research. It will help your mom see that these animals are not like rats and it will help you see if you really want a hamster.
Tell her hamsters are not from the sewer. They are from Syria, Asia, Russia or Mongolia. Also, the keep themselves clean and only pee in one spot in the cage. They are smart like that.
Good luck. Hamsters bite and try to escape their cage constantly. Oh and they are nocturnal. They will keep you awake all night running on their wheel or trying to escape.

If they do escape, they will gnaw on wood and get into food in the pantry and leave poop everywhere, you guessed it, just like a mouse...
What crawled up your moms butt and died? A sewer rat, ha ,lame.

Hamsters are cute tell you mom that hamsters have been raised in captivity since like the forties! I agree with the first guy. Tell your mom you want some ugly creature and she may change her mind.
even rats/mice from pet stores are clean

anyway hamsters have no tail for one, and your mum may be better with a fluffy hamster! (one that doesn't resemble the shape of a rat/mouse, because of the amount of fur)

    good luck!
I used to have a hamster. They are very cute and interesting animals.Just do it, bring one hamster to your home, I think your mom's gonna love it, when she gets to know him better!Good luck!
hamsters are known to chew the toes off of infants and they carrie rabies as well as ebola

however you can tape a kitchen knife to the back of a hamster creating an unstoppable fighting machine
well, they like to play with toys (like running in their little ball, you can buy them little cheese blocks they'll hide under, and chew toys) whereas rats like to play with sewage crap..
Well for one hamsters DONT have tails! lol They are also 3 times smaller that sewer rats! And hamsters are the cleanest of the rodents! I hope your mom lets up a bit! :) :)
show them pictures of ugly disgusting scary sewer rats %26amp; mice. then show them rats and mice you can buy! and u tell them that you want the nice clean ones!
hamsters are very soft and have shoet tails and they have big two fron teeth.rats have long tails with smaller teeth and some have red eyes
ask for a snake then maybe she'll be like the rat is better

Would the Republicans give a rats *** about hurricane Gustav if it wasn't an election year?

You are right...it is all for show! An election year to show how compassionate they are (when they can benefit)!Would the Republicans give a rats *** about hurricane Gustav if it wasn't an election year?
That is hard to say. I think they would seeing as how badly Katrina was handled. The fact is I think that Republicans as well as Democrats have learned from the past. Do you see how fast the people are being evacuated? That is because they want to avoid another disaster like the one that happened 3 years ago. We can not control the weather itself, but we can control how the situation is handled. Right now its being handled a lot better than before and that is because everyone knows that it was poorly taken care of last time. Good job on the officials this time around, and I wish the evacuees and those that own the homes in LA the best. Would the Republicans give a rats *** about hurricane Gustav if it wasn't an election year?
The main problem with Katrina fiasco was that the Governor of that state and the Mayor of New Orleans screwed up. They were given money ten years prior for infrastructure but they used it for something else.

Also for those who don't know and I'm going to guess its most. The Federal Govt. is not allowed to come into a state and offer any assistance until the state or city asks for it. That's what protects us from having Federal troops in out streets. Its also the reason why we can't put full time military on the borders. The mayor of New Orleans and the Gov did not request help from the Fed Govt until after the storm hit instead of before like they are doing now.

You can blame the Mayor of New Orleans for Katrina.
Not if there were anywhere else they wanted to be. Might interfere with their golf games, and yachting excursions. But that is just like anything else they have pretended to care about the last 8 years. They are real good pretenders, too, just look at how so many people believe the roll playing Bush did.
    Yes!

...they'd just be patronizing about it.

    ';And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this is working very well for them.';

That's Barbara Bush. Yes, on the victims of Katrina.
The republican governor of Louisiana is actually doing his job regarding disaster plans. He's not performing as his democratic predecessor did, when she told the President every thing was fine 12 hours after the levees broke.
You got that one right. Look at what McCain did. Taking his crew down they to get on TV to say to the American people see I care about this.

Like he did the last time. Having birthday cake with Bush.
Amazing how much power the people give Bush...but back to your question...

It is an election year and where is Obama? Sending an email and telling his supporters to help. If nothing else he can delegate.
Republicans don't give a rats a$$ period. All they care about is power and the well connected/wealthy.
Stop using a hurricane and other people's suffering for your petty, trivial, political nonsense.
Apparently Democrats think hundreds of people about to die is funny.

franmar....thank you!! wow, everyone was so quick to blame Bush and his hands were tied, I am not a big fan of Bush but that one was definitely not on him.
tell me about it, they wouldn't give a damn if it wasn't for the election. thanks for the question
No. They're licking their chops because they're going to use the tragedy for political gains. It's sad, but very true.
Why don't you run your *** down to New Orleans and ask them.
I highly doubt they would care. As a matter of fact, I doubt they REALLY care now.
noway.. they didnt give a crap during katrina!
    Hell no.
Hell no. Look what a wonderful job they did during Katrina.
H*ll No. Did a give one about Katrina?
    nope.
They don't and you know it
of course not, it's all part of the politics.

  • What could i get my rats for christmas?

i would like to get them something, but i dont know what. they have parrot toys, but they dont play with them. What could i get my rats for christmas?
nothing, animals don't believe in Santa Claus. What could i get my rats for christmas?
treats or a exercise wheel so they can play on.

    nest box, more toys.

Don鈥檛 overcrowd the cage with toys. Not only does this leave little room for your rats, but they might get hurt if a toy falls on them by accident. Let your rats play with a toy for a week, then take it away and replace it with a different one. If you switch your pet鈥檚 toys around regularly, they鈥檒l stay more active and interested in exploring their environment, which is necessary for their mental and physical health.

You should clean your rats' cage at least once a week. A clean home plays an important role in keeping your pet healthy.

    hope this helps =]

    You could get them:

    - A new, bigger cage (Martin's or Ferret Nation)

    - New hammocks (hanging cube ones are cool) http://www.wonderrodent.com/

    - New fluffy toys. Ferret.com has some cool toys like the octopus http://www.ferret.com/item/marshall-pet-鈥?/a>

    - Parrot food. The ones with big pieces of dried fruit and nuts in the shell. Mine like those to nibble on occasionally. Mine loooove peanuts in the shell.

    - A dirt box. Some rats like to dig for seeds. http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm#diggin鈥?/a>

    - Play pen

    - Cardboard box village

Just some ideas off the top of my head.

    Hope that helps!
What an adorable thought! A tiny cardboard box wrapped with giftwrap! and you know they would really enjoy opening it too! http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm seems to have lots of fun ideas for rats, but I dont know how gift-wrappable they are. heres some more wrappable ideas, but they look a lot like parrot toys. Are you sure they wont like them? http://www.rattoy.com/
Ha! Someone else who buys Christmas presents for their little pets! I do the same thing. I buy my pets toys and treats mostly. I even buy my fish new plants, or just another container of fish flakes. You could buy them a new pack of bedding, especially since it's something you probably buy anyway. Treats and toys are easiest ideas for me!
Why not try this website?; http://www.ratwarehouse.com/shop_view.ph鈥?/a>

They are closed at the moment but back at the end of the month - plenty of time to order for Christmas...

I think your rat would prefer rat toys to parrot ones.. They stock various foods, treats and accessories for your rats too.

I think the cargo net looks like great ratty fun!!

my sister bought her rat this plastic ball thing. you put the rat inside (it has air holes) and the rat runs around making the ball roll everywhere. Her rat loves it, but not sure where you'd get it from though
get a loo roll tube, put some treats in, wrap it in gift wrap, ratty cracker

    make them a hammok

    ping pong balls

    treats

harness ( so they can see the world )

    a teddy

a rope ( hung from top of cage)

I buy my rats these rat treats called Yogies, and they go nuts over them! They are just flavored yogurt drops. They come in many flavors, mine have strawberry. I've tasted one, and I can see why they love them so much.
What about tiny little rat sized football shirts with a rat football and two rat goals. Then they could have a little rat football match which you could film and keep. That would always put a smile on your face.
Cheese! There's this spanish product called ';Quezo De Bola';. It's a big ball of cheese usually given during the yuletide season...
I've heard exercise balls make rats stressed and arch their back and tail in an awkward position.

Try getting a salt lick, some treats and some other toys.
i give myy rats yummy treats like cheese wrapped up in paper .. so they havee to chew there way into it andd then theyy havee opened it themselfs :)
give them some toys or some yummt treats!!!theyll LOVE it!!!
You could get them a hammock-like thing if they like to climb.....
    Rat treats?
A rat ball! so they can roll around the house.
a new hammock to sleep on
    a cat.. :)

Why does one of my rats have bad diarrea?

I have 2 male rats and one has bad diarrea, all i have in their cage to eat is yogurt which they eat all the time, and rat block pellets, and some celery and carrots and they have their water bottle of course, i dont know whats wrongWhy does one of my rats have bad diarrea?
maybe the rat has more of a sweet tooth than your other rat and chooses to eat the vegetables and yoghurt over the block pellets. i would suggest to limit the amount of fruit, veggie, and yoghurt and keep track on how much of that you feed him. This will prevent him from having diarrheaWhy does one of my rats have bad diarrea?
dont feed them so much yogurt, it will in the least make them fat and is probably causing the problem, rats arent even sopposed to have that much dairy. Use it as a once week snack. try feeding them more mixed nuts and some fruit because the blocks dont always have everything they need.

I feed my boys organic fruit and veggie baby food because its cheap, easy to prepare, and full of vitamins and carbs to give them energy. But usually not everyday. they also eat un-salted trail mix and I throw some blocks in too but they normally dont eat them because I would assume their not as tasty. Would you wanna eat that? lol
too much fruit 'n' veggies nooooooooo yogurt should be given they can't digest it, more rat food, but if ya wanna give em yogurt give them specially formulated yogies find em at a pet store don't fret about diarrea if it's not too bad my hamster had it for about 5 days then she was fine and dandy.

Should we think of rats only as pests?

What the question says. It's also for an essay, as I have to write about it. So any ideas and such would be appreciated.Should we think of rats only as pests?
Rats have a bad rap just like Pitbulls. They should not be thought of as pests. They have been domesticated for many many years.Should we think of rats only as pests?
    No they aren't pests.

But I can't agree that they all make fantastic pets since mine bit and hid from us. In the end we had to sell them because they were causing us so much grief :(
No way!!! Rats have bad reputations for being pests and dirty creatures due to the sewage rats :/

I have 2 PET rats and they are adorable :D
Rats make excellent pets. Thay have an undeserved bad rap.
Rats are beautiful, INCREDIBLY intelligent, affectionate and surprisingly clean (more so than most other pets, including hamsters, rabbits, and even dogs).

They can be taught tricks, litter trained, and even know when you're upset.

But for some reason, people still think they're vermin. These people seem to have the opinions of ignorant, idiotic medieval folk. It's ridiculous how people still think of rats as vermin when they're actually quite possibly the most amazing, perfect pets ever.

I think of them as small dogs. Small, agile, less smelly dogs.

And this is coming from a dog AND rat owner. In fact, I've pretty much owned every single pet there is to own.

From canines, to felines, to rodents, fish, birds, bugs, insects, arachnids, reptiles, mustelides... Everything. But rats are by far my favourite. They never cease to amaze me.
No. Rats are intelligent and loving. They are worshipped in the Hindu religion. They are clean, fleas on them spread the plague and also killed the rats who carried them. They were the first Beings to return after Chernobyl.
ALL animals have a niche in nature, and a role to play. Although in many cases, Man has made changes to this (Norway rats are in North America due to ships coming here from Europe), but all creatures have their purpose.

They are pests in the sense that they interfere with our plans and activities...ignoring the fact that we destroy their homes and food, migration routes, and so on.
I have had rats for pets many times and pets and they are not so bad as a domesticated animal. The ild rat is a nuisance because they care a wide variety of diseases and are very hard to exterminate because they breed so rapidly and can have up to 12 babies per litter so that adds up to a couple thousand rats per year.
no not at all they are domesticated animals and they are loving just like any other pet that us people own and the wild maybe but the tam no they did bring a really deadly disease here and hill half a million people but that's was when we didn't have cures look at all the things that birds have a and other rodents have as well cats can even give you a feline disease but we don't think of them as Vernon's

    hope this helped
Definitely not. If anything, humans are the pests...
Absolutely not. There are many domesticated rat breeds that would never be able to survive in the wild as a scavenger. I know my Lily wouldnt.

They are clean, intelligent, gentle and ideal pets when bred correctly.

And it is sad and controversial, but rats are also used in medical research, and those rats are by no means pests. I dont think anyone could consider the animals that are helping to find treatments and cures for things like cancer and parkinsons as pests.
yea thier r nasty but they r not bugs

2 questions dealing with rats and flea bombing and my cat getting pregnant?

    1st question:

Should I take out my rats(4 rats) out of my house when I flea bomb my apartment? or should I just cover up their cage with a blanket? I think I should take them out, but my boyfriends friend say's that they will be okay to stay in the house, but I think i should remove them outta the house when I flea bomb. Just wanted to know what u think??

    2nd question:

If my cat is pregnant at the age of 6-7 months is that bad for her health or is she okay?2 questions dealing with rats and flea bombing and my cat getting pregnant?
you need to remove them, any living thing in the house will die if you don't. as far as the cat, shouldn't hurt her .2 questions dealing with rats and flea bombing and my cat getting pregnant?
Don't leave anything you don't want to die in the house while bombing. You should also arrange to keep your pets somewhere out of the house for a week or so and give it a chance to air out, also vacuum and clean all exposed surfaces in the house thoroughly before bringing them back in. Good luck with your flea problem!

Your cat is pretty young to be pregnant, but she'll probably be ok. Get her spayed once the kittens are weened.
All animals should be removed from the house whenever any toxic pesticide is used. They can become overexposed very quickly. The pregnant cat especially should not be exposed, it will be very bad for the kittens. Not to preach (well OK) but please look into spay clinics and spay your cat when she weans her babies. There are kittens available everywhere.
Rats: Get them out of the house, the bomb will kill them.

Cat: You need to probably get her on a high protein diet. Talk to a vet about what you should do. 6 -7 months is kinda young, but so long as you take care of her, she'll be okay. Have her checked out by a vet ASAP.

If she isnt pregnant, get her spayed right away - there are programs that you can apply for for reduced or free spay surgeries. Its how we fixed 2 of our girl dogs and one male.

If she IS... wait till shes weaned the kittens, then get the voucher.
um first you should take your rats out. because if the poison gets to their lungs, its all over. second i think your cat will be ok.

How do you send rats through the mail?

does anyone know how to go about doing this? How do you send rats through the mail?
You cannot send rats through the mail. There is a Yahoo Rat Transport group that might help with getting them from point a to point b, but not if you're selling them to someone - it's used to help out rescued rats get to their new home. How do you send rats through the mail?
Interesting, considering a rat would eat through a cardboard container.

I have shipped live birds via the postal service. You can check their site at www.usps.com. I had to use special cardboard boxes with the doves. They had to have food, water, and special air holes.

The rodent's chewing might make it a little different for this type of animal. This site is pretty informative.
Contrary to some beliefs, you don't just place a stamp on its forehead and shove him into the mailbox. It doesn't work that way. In fact, I do not belive US or Cdn postals send any live animals via normal mail. They would be special courier. Check with your post office.
Fed Ex and UPS are some of the largest drug smugglers in the world...Im sure youll figure it out. FYI it will probably die in the mail. You are a jerk for asking btw.
are you stupid why would you want to send a rat through the mail. it is not only stupid but dumb.a live rat would die if the is no holes in the package to allow it to breath.

    i hope this helps
You can use a specialist pet transportation company, who will ensure that your pet is safely handled.

Be aware that it's not cheap - allow at least $60+ per rat :)
I think the way is to provide plenty of insulation, while still having air hold, and some water that somhow doesnt spill. Just a suggestion.
if your selling someone pet rats, you either go to them with the rats or they come to you to pick them up.
You can send them on an airplane. That's how we got our puppy from Kansas to Oregon.
what? seriously? what makes you think this is a good idea
Live rats? I don't think you can.
use a good sized box that won't give away the contents.
i dont think that you can i would ask a postal station

Is it normal for rats to sway back and forth?

We just got a baby rat on Thursday, I'm not sure of her age but the pet store was just releasing her for sale when we got there so I'm guessing around 9 weeks old. Well... we actually got 2 (females), the one starts to sway back and forth sometimes when shes walking.

Is this normal? Is it normal for rats to sway back and forth?
If your rat has pink/red/redish colored eyes, then this is normal. It is trying to focus on something or judge distances. I was worried when my beige hooded rat who has some red in his eyes started doing this, but the vet said it was normal. My other rat who has dark eyes does not do this. Unfortunately rats have rather poor eyesight and rely mostly on their sense of smell and hearing. Is it normal for rats to sway back and forth?
well to answer this question there is a number of things that could be it.

If she has red or pink eyes, this connects to an inner ear/balance problem, this causes a swaying or bobbing motion in the head and sometimes whole body.

if she has an ear infection or has recovered from an ear infection then she may have a damaged ear drum, this also causes a balance and hearing problem, also causing the head to sway.

if she is of the dumbo or skinny rat genus, this is also common.

more likely then not she is fine and just has an inner ear problem, common in pet shop rats for their bloodlines are minimal, meaning father is bred to daughter and son is bred to mother...
I've seen rats doing that- it's normally because there's conflicting smells and sights around them. Remember, rats see out of side eyes, not front eyes, so they see two different sights, which can confuse them. I'd say it's totally normal unless-

1.) The rat has had a bump on the head.

2.) You see any other symptoms such as-

    Nose bleeds.

    Seizures.

    Limpness of limbs.

    Difficulty walking.

    Tiredness.

All of which could indicate a stroke or a neurological condition. HOWEVER, don't panic- it sounds perfectly normal.
Well for one thing ur rat was prolly 5-6 weeks old when you got her, that's the typical selling age for pet stores. Rats have poor eyesight so the swaying back and forth is normal, especially for red eyed ones. Nothing to worry about. i think its adorable! =] i think sum1 already answered this ? correctly but oh well..
what color are her eyes? if they are red then that is considered the ';worst'; eyesight for rats. rats have bad eyesight and the red-eyed ones are nearly blind. So sometimes when they're trying to focus the world they will sway their head side to side.
She could be swaying in order to have a better look @ something. We've especially noticed this in our rats with pink or red eyes, as their eyesight is even weaker than that of dark-eyed rats.

  • Help-We have a lot of mouse, mice or small rats in the house?

We have a lot of mice in the house-London,England! We are using for 2 years RENTOKIL RODINE(拢3.99 for 3 small packs of 50g in a box) Mouse and Rat Killer, which is just perfect for feeding them, but not to control or kill them.Do not buy this product, because is not working and it's good for nothing.I did spent a lot of money on this product for nothing.

Do anyone out there knows which is the best and efective Mouse and Rat killer?Thank youHelp-We have a lot of mouse, mice or small rats in the house?
poison is a bad idea as they never die where the poison is. they usually die in their nest which may be hard to find, hard to reach, impossible places. and dead mice smell horrible.

Use the adhesive traps, place them in high traffic areas( against the wall, behind dressers, entertainment centers, refrigerators, stoves, you get the idea)

They are the most effective, thats why the extermination companies have switched to them.

if you have any doubt, try one out on your fingertip, they are effective!

just remember to check them daily, or you may end up smelling the ones you catch

Also a great way to control insects!Help-We have a lot of mouse, mice or small rats in the house?
dont use adhesive traps they are cruel and the animal will be distressed and take ages to die,if you are going to kill something use a trap that will kill quickly.

    get a cat
get the rat catcher in it will be a lot cheaper than keep paying out for stuff that don't work on the rats etc.
Your council should sort it Free of charge, it is vermin and should be treated professionally.
i use peanut butter for bait in traps. for spaces you can get to put moth balls in a sack, such as old socks, the smell will cause them to go elseware
Peanut butter is the best bait. Eliminate their access to food and they will move on when the temperature warms up outside. After they leave in the spring, Inspect the exterior of your house for ANY hole bigger around than a pencil, and fill with coarse steel wool before caulking. Look around water spigots, downspouts, electrical entrances, where your house meets the foundation, door bottoms, etc.

Because im not likey to die from swine flu is my rabbit and my dog and my rats going to die from it?

i really want to know if they will die and if they wil :( how to prevent them from getting it.Because im not likey to die from swine flu is my rabbit and my dog and my rats going to die from it?
Try not to worry. The most important thing that you can do for yourself and your animals is practice good hygiene. Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water prior to handling your animals and in between handling your animals. If you touch your dog, wash your hands before you touch your rabbit or cat - vice versa.

It's very important to wash your hands when you come in to your home from being out in the general public, too.

We have a no shoes policy in my home because we want to keep the germs we get on the outside to stay outside.Because im not likey to die from swine flu is my rabbit and my dog and my rats going to die from it?
Its not passable to other animals hun. They'll be fine. But you should always wash your hands before and after so you don't pass something from the dog, to the rats, or from the rats to the rabbit.

Don't worry about the pig flu. It'll pass just like the whole bird flu craze.
i really hope not cos i have 2 rabbits 2 gerbils and 2 chickens

and thanks for asking this questions

i am sure you and your pets will be fine

    xx
the chances of your animals dying of the swine flu are none. I repeat none.

What should I put on the flooring of a (Pet) Rats cage?

Please advise! Links aswell please, I've heard wood pellets can be used for cage flooring but my local P@H only stock Recycled Paper, it's cheap - can it be used as flooring?

Thanks! What should I put on the flooring of a (Pet) Rats cage?
    http://www.ecopet.co.uk/

I swear by ecopetbed...keeps the smell to a minimum its absorbent, isnt prone to ending up on the floor around the cage, and the big bale lasts AGES so it works out really cost effective...the big bale might cost a lot but it works out much cheaper than recycled paper.

Your other option is paper cat litter...only the Biocatolet brand is proven dust free enough, its its expensive, or plain newspaper with a blob of wood pellet cat litter in each corner of the cage (rats usually go in the corners). Carefresh is an option but EXPENSIVE. Please dont use shavings, these people dont know what they are talking about, they are terrible for rats lungs. But honestly, ecopetbed is awesome. What should I put on the flooring of a (Pet) Rats cage?
Wood shavings can be very harmful. If you HAVE to use wood, go with aspen. it is acceptable. They also have carefresh which is basically a safe form of newspaper, it may also be called woodfibers and they work pretty good. Corncob is also another kind. It hides the smell but isn't very absorbent, you have to change this often or it may rot. Coco is the kind that I use. It is actually a reptile bedding but I have had two different sales people tell me that it is the best kind. It absorbs the pee and evaporates it. The smell is completely natural. A large bag at my local pet store costs $11.99, i used half a bag on my cage, the bottom being 30in by about 24in. The smaller bag is probably $6.99. It has worked the best by far. You dont even have to change it all at once. Do not use newspaper, the ink will run when they pee, getting it on their fur, and they can eventually get ink poisoning.

Pets at Home do cat litter that they advise you use - I use one called Bio Catolet, it's one of the cheaper ones, but you need to use cat litter to absorb the smell and also bear in mind their little lungs! They can't use sawdust or shredded paper really, you can put some in so they can make a nest but the flooring should really be cat litter.
im pretty sure recycled paper is fine just make sure it had no ink or anything in it.

my vet recomended for my girls either carefresh,or aspen bedding(type of woud chips but ok for rats and does not cause respitory infections).

but im not to sure about recyled paper ill have to call my vet then.

    hope i helped.

well nevermind i just remembered carfresh is recyled news paper.so yas it should be fine or you could use pupy pads ive heard but i think that rats would have a blast shredding that.haha.and i also read you can buy a paper shredder and make your own bedding.
Don't use wood pellets they are too abrasive and will cause bumblefoot, if you get a litter tray they'll use it, I line my shelves and the bottom of cage with fleece fabric cut to size, I have two of each sized piece i need then all I do is take it out shake and brush it over the bin and wash it, when they are young use newspaper in the bottom, till they stop chewing, the paper pellets I presume you mean biocatolet are good in the litter tray, if you have a multi level cage put another tray higher up, drill a hole %26amp;put a split ring and hook on it so they don't knock it off, on ebay there are some small litter trays with grids in, the waste drops through and they can't dig in it, ripped up newspaper in the litter tray works but it'll need emptying everyday, as newspaper gets soggy quick. p.s the biocatolet pellets are too hard to be used for the full bottom of the cage and it would work out not to be so cheap. a friend of mine buys cheap pillowcases and tea towels,
mmm... I wouldn't I'm a bit worried that it may get a paper cut.

My auntie who breeds uses Puppy pads from argos for her rats, it soaks up pee very well, it's very comfy and she prefers it to any other bedding as she only has to remove the pad and then place a new one in!

    http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores鈥?/a>

They fit perfectly in the bottom of her cage and do her for half the year!
    hi

please do not use sawdust or wood pellets as these can cause resp problems, i use off cuts of tea bags which a nearby petshop ger in in bales, but not everyone can get hold of this, i am a memeber of a rat club %26amp; most people use cardboard squares, recycled cat litter (paper based), carefresh, fleece blankets.

    hope this helps

    x
A lot of people think you have to put bedding on the whole cage- that's not true. Just use some old fabric (fleece, pillowcases, etc.) on the flooring, and then put the bedding in the litterpan. Assuming they're litter trained. If not, litter train them, it'll be a whole lot easier.
yeah that or i just put newspaper at the bottom of the cage and then either shredded paper of recycle paper on top to soak up moisture. This website has useful info that might help you.

    www.ratz.co.uk/ratbedding.html
CareFresh is DEFINENTLY the best bedding to use!

It keeps the stink wayy low and you can get it in pretty colors ;)

You can probably get it at any pet store, but i get mine at petsmart.

    Hope this helped!
Anything from shredded paper to wood chips is fine for a rat. Cage bedding works the best for me, here is a great site with info and links:

    http://ratguide.com/care/environment/cage_bedding_litter.php
I use Carefresh which is recycled newspaper shredded up, you can buy it in different colors if you want. DON'T USE PINE SHREDDINGS
Recycled paper products are best. Wood shavings and chips contain dust that is terribly bad for the health of your rat.
dont get wood chips alot of rats get allergic reactions to wood chips. newspaper/paper is fne as flooring
i use old t shirts in my rats cage, its alot easier to clean
I've tried alot of products but nothing has beat Sun Sead bedding, made from recycled newspapers and magazines and has baking soda in it for odor control. I line the bage bottom with a layer of newspapers and spread the bedding around.

It has virtually no dust and is great for odor control.

    I get it at PetCo.

    Good luck !
try wood shavings you can find them online or at a pet store.

    try this website!!!
saw dust or hay guineas like it so same thing check with your pet shop

What can I do with a barred wheel so my rats fet or tail don't get caught?

I don't want my rats tail or feet to get caught in the weel I heard that you can put tape around the edge but I'm not so sureWhat can I do with a barred wheel so my rats fet or tail don't get caught?
Superpetusa.com makes safe wheels for all animals. They do not have bars but are made of a kind of hard mesh instead. That is the only type wheel I sell in my pet store. They make a really nice size for rats too. What can I do with a barred wheel so my rats fet or tail don't get caught?
I would suggest getting a plastic wheel. I think ';silent spinners'; are the best.
My rats always prefered those clear balls that they can run around the house in!
I lined the inside with a short carpet
You can use contact paper for drawers, its the easiest because it is already sticky on one side but the big problem with those wheels are the sides where the wheels turn, the rats tend to wrap their tails around it when they run then when the wheel turns it breaks or sometimes cuts thier tails, You could use contact paper on that as well just be sure to do both sides so that there isnt any sticky sides. You could also just get rid of the wheel and add other toys here are some ideas on making your own. Or you could use bird toys or ferret toys.

    http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm
perhaps you could line the inside with needlepoint mat? That way the holes are too small to fall through, and there's something to grip to turn the wheel. Just purchase the size you like in plastic and cut to size and attach within the wheel. You can find in a needle arts store or in a crafts store.
I had one of those big roll-around balls for my rats. They're much safer, and the rat can go all over the house in it.

How do I keep the birds and not the rats from using my bird feeder?

Kill the nasty rats with D-Con !!How do I keep the birds and not the rats from using my bird feeder?
We have birdfeeders and don't have a rat issue. Now the squirrels try to steal the bird food; but, my husband madde something and humg up there so that the little squirrel thieves were out of business. Don't know what it was ...some kind of metal thing. How do I keep the birds and not the rats from using my bird feeder?
I had a neighbor who put a sheet of plastic around a pole. The pole had the feeder at the top and the plastic sheet, which was stiff and wrapped around the pole like a collar or a lampshade closed around the pole but flaired out around the border was lower down. It reminded me of those collars they put on dogs to keep them from licking their wounds after surgery. The result is the rats (who can climb poles and the squirrels he had a problem with) could not get beyond the plastic sheet or collar if that is the best way to describe it. It was slick and while stiff was also still flexible enough the the unwanted parties just fell off.
Hanging the feeder will not solve your problem. The birds will spill some seeds to the ground and the rats will come to eat them. The only real soulution is to stop feeding the birds. As long as you continue to put food out, rats will be attracted to it, and rats are the more agressive creature. The rats will win if the food is there.
If the feeder is the pole type, slide a piece of PVC pipe about 3 foot long over the bottom of the pole. It is slippery enough they can't climb it. I do the same thing for squirrels
TRY HANGING THE BIRD FEEDER SOMEWHERE THE RATS CANT GET TO
    Do you feed rats??
Do you mean that you want to keep the birds from using the feeder, or the rats? I am confused.

But if you want to keep rats out of it, get one of those long, skinny metal hooks that you screw into the side of your house or your deck (I put mine on the side of the house because it's a smoother, less grippable surface) and put the bird feeder on there. And sweep up the discarded shells, etc. daily to keep the rats from being so attracted to it. Other than that, there's not much you can do if you have an infestation unless you want to resort to rat traps and poison.
find a rubber snake large one and sit it on the bird feeder and move it around every now and then..birds hate snakes.

Can I give a clump of snow to my rats?

It's my rats first winter and they've never seen snow before. I was wondering if it would be okay to bring in a small clump of snow for them to mess around with. Would that be dangerous? I know bringing the rat outside in the snow completely wouldn't be safe but if I just gave them some in their cage would that be okay? Thanks! Can I give a clump of snow to my rats?
Go for it. Rats are designed to eat and live on anything - think about what city rats eat. yuck.

I bet they'll love it. My rats used to love ice cream, and over-ripe fruit for that matter. They'd get all happy and run around with it and try to find a spot to eat it where no one else could get any.Can I give a clump of snow to my rats?
no, don't snow is full of pollution and can get them sick.also,it could give them a cold.Plus,it would get their bedding wet.

but if you do put it in the bath tub with your rats and let them play.

but make sure that the snow is clean and white.(not yellow, brown, pink ect....)
    I don't see why not.

ben o why not, why is it bad for rats to interact with snow?

There is snow on the ground; I have rats in cages indoors. Maybe, I will try it.

Maybe, put rat(s) and snow in the bath tub. That way their cage wont get messed up.
Just a bit in a container they can easily get in and out of easily sounds fine. Check they don't get wet and chilled and their cage doesn't end up wet from melted snow.

Check snow is clean. Avoid yellow snow ! lol
I think it would be safe. A little snow didn't hurt anything. Wild rats and mice live through it. just put it in a little bowl or something so it doesn't make a mess everywhere
i dont think it would be dangerous, just a bit cold for them. put a bit in a tub, and see what they do
I say go for it! Mine Love Ice and snows basically the same thing. Its Frozen water! I would give mine snow but Im in florida so...no snow lol
yes i did it with mine and they were so happy! and if you feed it to them they think its amazing
    not a good idea

How to freeze rats for snake food.?

I am going to start breeding rats for my snakes. How do i go about freezing them like in the shops. How to freeze rats for snake food.?
make your self a co2 chamber, its the most humaine way to do a kill, once they are dead, you can freeze them,How to freeze rats for snake food.?
Ok from personal experience I have tried breeding rats for my snake... he eats them alive... and you are going to have one hell of a time with the smell! Its rancid! And if your snake doesnt eat them alive, your going to have to kill them yourself which is just way beyond what you should have to do just to feed your pet... Your not going to be saving that much money - a pack of frozen mice are like under $5 and only a little over a $1 for one that is alive... Majority of the time pet stores cant guarantee the sex of small rodents... so unless you plan on having more than 2 your house is going to be nassstayyy!
dont listen to most ov the people on here. when they are ready to be frozen, simple kill em humanly put em in a freezer burn proof zip lock type bag, throw em in the freezer. very simple. the semi hard part, is figuring out how to kill em, lol.

i breed for fuzzies and adult size mice. for the fuzzies i simply dip em in water and throw them in the zip lock, then into the freezer, f*ck it, right.

for the adults its a bit tricker, then again not too hard, i just throw em all in a box and then into the freezer, such as a steralite tub, make em freeze. their feeder mice. f*ck you who say any different.
don't listen to these ppl, nubs =_=. i breed mice for my snakes, first once breed and ready to freeze, kill the mice by pulling there head and tail in opposite directions, that will kill them quickly and they wont feel a thing. next put them in zip lock bags and put them in the freezer.
You can't they are flash frozen.

Like if you freeze a rabbit you gut it first, the same as any animal you choose to pick. Freeze it with the soft entrails in and they collapse and rot in thawing poisoning the meat. A house hold freezer is to slow.

Why would you want to kill the rat, it's easier to feed live, but illegal in the UK.
well i hate mice and rats but i only have them in my house cos of my snakes but if i was you id just stick them in the freezer and check on them 30 Min's later should do the job
no need to freeze them, feed them live it is better for the snake. But if you must freeze place them in a solid box and place into freezer,24hrs later place in storage bags.
Thats animal cruelty buddy and Im pretty sure you can get fined for it. Just buy pre-killed rats, its cheaper. If any shops are freezing their rats for snake food, report them to the RSPCA.

Probably rats... squirrels tuck in pretty early. It could be an opossum. And if it is, it is probably building a nest. So get someone to check it out for you. If it's a raccoon, those things are mean!
Most likely its rats. Squirrels are generally not nocturnal and rarely will they occupy the same space.
Put up a trap or two and find out.
    Most likely it's mice.
    Those things are called ghosts!!
squirrels during the day, rats by night. this answer comes from a farm girl.

Do rats or sugar gliders make better pets?

I am thinking of getting one of these two little creatures :]

and would like to know which one (in your opinion) makes the better pet

Which one ist smarter? which one is more loving, Easier to take care of? ect.

TY all who put in the time to help me out :D!Do rats or sugar gliders make better pets?
I've owned sugar gliders and rats - some things I noticed:

-Sugar gliders bite more than rats. You have to work with sugar gliders to get them to trust you. Rats don't really seem to mind being handled, unless they've had bad human experiences in the past.

-Rats smell worse than sugar gliders. No matter what, they have a fairly strong smell to them. However, sugar gliders can be pretty smelly if you don't clean their cage often, or if you have intact (not neutered) males.

-Rats are far easier to care for than sugar gliders. Their cage doesn't need to be as large, they don't need a specialized diet (just pick up a bag of rat food at the store), they don't require 4 hours of your time each day (sugar gliders need 3 hours during the day in a bonding pouch around your neck, then an hour of playtime at night), it's easier to find toys and other cage accessories for them, and overall, rats are cheaper. A rat at the pet store is what? $10? Normally, standard gray sugar gliders sell for around $150 - $200, average. (Sugar gliders are the cheap part to having sugar gliders!)

-Rats don't have to be kept in pairs without risking their health. Sugar gliders should always be kept in pairs, at least, because they are very social animals and live in large colonies in the wild. Single gliders may self mutilate/starve/dehydrate themselves to death due to depression from being alone. No matter how much time you spend with them, it doesn't replace a second sugar glider. You can't speak glider, you can't sleep in the pouch with them, you can't groom them like they groom each other, you can't run on the wheel with them - you can't compare to a second sugar glider.

-There's not really any way to say which is 'smarter.' Rats are very intelligent creatures, but sugar gliders are crafty. I've heard of some sugar gliders that learn their names (typically females), but you can teach rats tricks. Rats can also be potty trained, whereas sugar gliders can't be. Suggies will go potty wherever they are when they gotta go.

-Some will say rats are more loving, but I feel that sugar gliders are more loving. Rats will sometimes cuddle with you or chill on your shoulder, but sugar gliders will groom you, they'll bark for you (at 2 in the morning), they'll click to you, they'll dive down your shirt (if they're bra babies), they'll run to you if they're scared.... However, it takes time to establish this bond with sugar gliders. You have to be willing to take some bites, be crabbed at, etc. to gain this relationship with your gliders.

Feel free to e-mail me with any other questions if you'd like.Do rats or sugar gliders make better pets?
If your looking to get a easy to take care of pet get a rat. Sugar gliders are cute and look really cuddly but unless your used to staying up all night your not going to want one . Sugar gliders also have quite the complex diet . Rats can eat just about any thing can be trained to do tricks and to sit on your shoulder and they're not as expensive. I have a rat that just loves to sit in my pocket all day. If your a first timer at a small pet Definitely go with the rat. If you keep their cage clean you wont have to worry about smell and well guess who loves table scraps ...even the vegetables, I would have to say the rat is smarter... I haven't heard of a trained squirrel yet. Good luck hope this helps!
i used to have a rat she was the smartest sweetest animal in the world i loved her so much i trained her to do tricks and everything!
i would get a mouse because rats are discsing and sugar gliders are lazy!!!
Well when i had 3 rats I loved them to bits Ive never had a sugar glider!
I own 4 sugar gliders. So speaking from experience there are MANY MANY things to know before getting any. First off you MUST get at LEAST TWO sugar gliders. They are colony creatures and WILL get lonely. Loneliness leads to self mutilation which usually leads to death if not caught very early. No matter what anyone says, you can't speak glider, you can't cuddle in their pouch for warmth with them, and you can't run in their wheel with them. Humans simply can not replace a second glider. Secondly, their cages need to be as big as you can possibly afford. So the initial expense is usually over $500. It's about $100 for each glider, at least $150 for the cage, and about $100 for food, pouches, wheel, etc. Contrary to popular belief, you cannot just feed your glider a pellet food. They require a pretty complicated diet. There are many diets to choose from, but most of them include an ingredient or two that you can only find online. It usually takes me about an hour or two to make a batch of food. I freeze whatever I'm notfeeding them that night and the frozen stuff usually lasts about a month before I have to make more. Male gliders smell. Bad. Unless you get them neutered which is VERY VERY important. There are hundreds of gliders in need of homes because people get them and they don't end up having the time or the patience to bond and care for the creatures. Please, any animal you get please please get neutered. We don't need more homeless animals. Back to the gliders. They are nocturnal, so you need to be up rather late to see them play. And they are LOUD at night. They make lots of noises, one of the most common being ';barking';. This sounds just like what you're imagining. It sounds like a small dog barking. So if you are a teenager living with your parents and have to keep your gliders in your room, this usually doesn't work. They will come to you and they WILL bite. It can take months or even years [and lots of blood from the bites] to bond with a glider. Some gliders don't bond at all. Rarely do gliders bond within days or weeks. Gliders DO NOT LIKE TO BE HELD. A very rare few will not mind, but gliders are still wild animals and would much prefer to be on you than held by you. If out of their cage, they must be in a glider safe environment which means ANY HOLE THAT YOU CAN FIT YOUR THUMB INTO IS A DANGER. Gliders are very fast and very curious. They will run straight for the holes, you can count on it. Also taking them outside and to work with you and things like that are very stressful to the gliders. This can also lead to self mutilation. Unless your glider is VERY bonded to you, it is not recommended that you take them out of your home. Any more questions PLEASE FEEL FREE to email me. fadedrainbows828@yahoo.com

Also, I really recommend visiting sugarglider.com and glidercentral.net and just read the forums before decided whether or not to buy. While I love gliders I just feel it is really important that they go to good homes. Here is a link that talks about some of the needs of glider and the first sentence is ';So is a sugar glider a good pet for you?'; http://www.sugarglider.com/gliderpedia/i鈥?/a>
