From personal experience and knowledge - DO NOT buy a rat or mouse as a pet from a petstore. They breed rodents specifically for food, not for pets. They are usually severely inbred and not cared for properly. They may look healthy in a petstore, but I can tell you from experience that if you are looking to keep this little guy as a pet, then you'll be taking him to the Vet A LOT. They are very prone to cancer.. and will live a short life. Not to mention, by buying an animal from a petstore like this, you are creating a demand so more and more will be bred to death. To stop the overbreeding of animals and the terrible conditions in which they are brought up in - stop supporting animal mills and buy straight from a breeder.

Buying from a rat breeder will give you a much healthier rat, and they are already used to human interaction and will be more lovey dovey and easy to handle. They wont be fearful and generally live longer lives.

Look around for a breeder, please, don't buy from a store.

Don't feed it hampster food either... these diets are meant for hampsters, NOT rats!! I learned that the rats I have been caring for live longer and healthier when fed toddler foods. They LOVE LOVE LOVE toddler food!!! The pasta pickups, the veggies, the snacks... Of course you will need to feed them specially made rat/rodent foods for the proper vitamins, all of my rats are happy and healthy.Any one know if petland in port jefferson on long island has healthy young female rats?
It's always best to buy from a breeder. Sometimes they can be difficult to find, so prepare for a search. It's worth the frustration though. Look around with google, craigslist, and petfinder websites. You can also look around for vets who treat rats. Many times they will have contact info for rat breeders. You will ALWAYS get a healthier rat that has a better temperament and that will live longer if you get it from a breeder.
dont buy from petland, they support puppymills. go to petsmart, pet co gives u prenant animals alot.
