So uhm a few minutes ago my sister was holding our pet rats and the rat was really energetic so my sister was having a hard time keeping hold of her, then my sister heard this crack sound and froze thinking she broke the rats tail so i had to catch the rat before she got away, is there a way to tell if it is broken? The rat didn't make any noise when it happened.

I have a rat who was surrendered with a broken tail, to the one before who said they don't have as good of balance, not true, not true at all ! Odessa gets around like any other rat and have never stumbled or fell if running along a stick, they do learn to cope with what has happened. I also have a male rat who lost almost half of his tail, and he still has excellent balance.

If there's a kink in your rats tail it may have broken, but it may have just been a simple snap.How do you know if your rats tail is broken?
The tail will have a kink in it if it is broken and would not be as flexible.
The rat would probably be holding it awkwardly and as it uses the tail for balancing would not be as agile.
If none of these things are evident, it probably cracked like people crack their knuckles and other joints, in that charming way they have.
