Okay, maybe this web site can help you solve the Garden Rat problem.

The site suggest several options that are all Natural Control Tips,

you don't want to put poisons around or in your precious garden, it could contaminated your food source.

Visit it ASAP

Extra tip: Castor Oil is is a natural deterrent to rodents and insects. You might want to put some in a spray bottle and spray it around the yard area: Do Not spray it on the plants. (it contains ricin-a natural potent insecticide)

Good Luck! Please, can someone tell me how to prevent rats in your backyard?
Work in a pest control company and you will never have anymore problems...trust me
get two white male rats let them be in your backyard and they wont let other rats in and they dont damage things they are sweet
Keep your grass cut and your yard clean
Do you have fruit trees back there? Rats love orange and grapefruit trees and will attract them.
Gardens do get a ton of pests.

I have a bunny issue, putting a border of marigolds works for them, so does spreading dog fesces where they enter. I am not sure if this will work for marigolds.

You might want to email the Oragic Gardening Magazine website. They have a QA there and many more experts.
buy a medium to large snake and keep it in your garden.

a cat might work also.

a Terier dog would love to go after a rat, but unlike the snake and cat, it would cause lots of damage to ghe garden by itself.
Put out boxes of Decon rat posion but put it under boxes that only have a opening big enough for a rat (not a cat or dog) they will eat it and go away and die.

That is the only way to get rid of rats, if a cat or dog eat a rat that has died from the poision it will not hurt them........ trust me.
A cat - tabby or some other mouser will work best. I have one that guards my garden pretty well takes care of the mice, bunnie, moles and anything else.
well, if you clean up the pepper, the cats will come back and you'll have no more mice.
Get a cat, several if you have to.

Rodents have a lifestyle. They sleep in one place, have fun in another (running around) and eat in another. Your garden has become their eating place, their restaurant if you like.

I once lived in a house in which rodents were using as their fun place. They would come in at night and run around, but they never touched the food or stayed overnight. Weird, but true.
Land mines...I have found that the first rat that steps on a land mine will make an example for any other that may think about following to eat your precious garden...make sure you keep them marked so you don't accidentally trigger them though, that wouldn't be a good thing!!
Go to your local hardware store. Buy some heavy guage chickenwire and enough wood stakes to place 4 feet apart and surround your garden. The fencing should be at least 2 feet high.

A very zealous rat (or other rodent) can circumvent this with effort. But, it should work for most, especially since something is present in the neighborhood that has already drawn the rats to the area. It is posible they will find a more easily attainable meal.

If you take the proper precautions, you can purchase a large voltage electric lantern (big flashlight) battery at the store for $5-$20 bucks and electrify the fence overnight and see if that provides any entertainment or dead rats...
