Is there anything that you can put around the outside of your house that repels rats?

We live in a mobile home and they are getting underneath the house and we cannot get rid of them. It started by us keeping our dog food on the porch outside. We have tried rat traps but could not seem to eliminate the whole group, and cannot use poison due to our pets.Is there anything that you can put around the outside of your house that repels rats?

Preventative meausres you could take are eliminating any harbourage sites, like rubbish piles, old boxes etc. If it is winter where you are they may be looking for nesting sites so do not provide them with any.

I am not sure where you are but here in australia the best place is farm suply shops or some pest controllers will also sell Tamper Resistant bait staions(TRBS). This way you can use rat bait with the worry of hurting ur pets. If you are in the U.S, try calling a company called Bell. They are the largest manufacturer of TRBS in the world and I use them in australia. Make sure you continue to keep the dog food away from them as it contains Vitamin K...Vitamin K is an antecdote for anti-coagulants( rat bait).

Get something with the active ingredient Brodifacoum or Bromadiolone, it may take 5-7 days for the rat to die but if they start getting sick too soon the others rats will notice and they may become bait shy. Place the TRBS in areas you know the rats are travelling but dont be surprised if they take a few days to eat the bait as rats are 'Neophobic' . Rats have poor eye sight and when something new is place in their path they take a few days to get used to it...it wont take long and they will invesigate. Make sure if you are handling the rat bait you wear latex gloves. Rats have a very high sense of smell and will detect if a human has touched it e.g Tobacco smell if you are a smoker

Good luck
A cat or two works very well. You aren't likely to ever eliminate them completely but once the cats get busy the rats won't be around your house much. If you're feeding the dog outside, don't. Even the empty bowl will attract them.
