I recently bought 2 female rats. One is fine, the 1st time I opened the cage she came running out and lets me handle her. the other however tries to bite me everytime I go near her. She has come out of the dage a fw times on her own and sat on my lap but always tries to bite me. I don't know what to do. How do I tame her?How do I tame my rats?

What has really worked well for most rat-keepers, including myself, is wearing a Hoodie

Both the hood and the front pocket become a secure little cave for the rats to ride in. You wear this around the house, keeping your rats close to you at all times. They learn your warmth, your smell, and therefore you are their security. You can pet them while they are in the pocket............
This website will help you understand your ratties which will help with the bonding process.

If they are still fairly young, it might be done. Ignore her when you are feeding and handling the other. Make sure you are getting into the cage frequently to handle the one that does not bite. After a while, the one who generally bites will start getting used to you. Lay your hand down on the floor of the cage and let her sniff it. She might try to climb into your hand after a while and she might possibly accept you petting her. Slowly you will build a relationship with her. Don't try to force her. It would most likely, in her mind, validate her reasons for biting you and make her do it more.
I got the same problem before....one is fine the other ones not...what i did was i always let them out everyday...i spend extra time with her...she was doing good shes not biting anymore not untill her sister die.. she return to her biting again...and she look so sad so i got her a cagemate the following day for the first time...when i let them out she ran to me...went to my shoulder and kiss me on the lips.
Well, honestly its not that hard training rodents. I had a similar problem when my teacher gave me an aggressive rodent some time ago. I don't think she took very good care of it, because BOY DID IT BITE! It was almost impossible to get her out of her cage, let alone tame her. Have a look at some of the steps I took to get Lakota from a Evil Fluffball to a Sweet Playful Hamster.
1. To get her out of her cage, I coaxed her out with food.
2. If she misbehaved, I would take my hands (or if you want, a stick of some sort) and gently squished her down with it. It might sound a little.. violent, but really it calms them down, and teaches them ';who's the boss';
3. If she behaved, I would let her have her way and let her run around loosely. Also, I would coax her and play with her.
Remember, if you want to really get your pet used to you, you have to play with it daily and care for it!!
I had two rats and they were so cute, but eventually had to give up one cause it kept biting people.
well after having the rats for a while they wil get used to you and then you can tame them but i recommend to only teach them one trick at a time or they can forget or get very over tired and stressed
With a whip and a chair.
I have the same problem. Two female rats one is sweet and wants to be around me the other bites strangers and likes to run away every time she gets. I think the only reason she doesn't bite me is because she knows I feed her. I try to handle her its just too hard. But I'm holding her at least 10mins every day and hopefully she comes around. Good Luck with the wild rat! :]
More you touch them the more they get used to it. Are they young because its best to handle them when they are young. The older they are the more likely they will never be tame. Good luck with the New Rats. Might think of getting a male and then you will have baby ones and you can hold them.
when i got my rat i had to tame her. she had the same problem, she let me handle her, BUT bit me. on my nose, my hand, my toe, my ear and my finger and she made me bleed all over. best thing to do is get a small water spritzer and everytime she goes for it spray her, or take your finger away and poke her on the head and say ';no'; very sternly! worked for me. also make sure your hands dont smell sweet or like any lotions or even cigarettes. those smells make them bite even more!
You have to practice touch with her EVERYDAY.
She will eventually learn to love you.
Also, give her a small treat when she comes up to you. Try to hand feed her as much as possible.
She will then associate you with something pleasurable
shes a rat.... i cant see much changing. if you want a trainable pet get a dog
