It depends on whether you really mean rats or if you just categorize all rodents as rats. Rats are really big and can be dangerous. If you have put poison out do not use a cat as they may get into the poison as well. Even though I have two cats one of which is a great mouser I go ahead and set traps baited with peanut butter. Of course get the correct size traps for your problem. After you use a trap 3 - 4 times either disinfect it or use new ones because the rat/mouse will smell the blood and won't go near it. We life in a rural area and we have field mice that come in during certain weather conditions. I promise you traps with pb work. One more thing to consider. Have you actually seen rats/mice? Sometimes squirrels will make their home in an attic as will bats and other small critters that can find a way in. All in all, your best bet might just be calling in a pest control expert. Do not try to remove squirrels or bats by yourself. They can easily pass rabies and other diseases on to you.
Best of luck ridding your home of these house squatters!
By the way, cats are a big responsibility. Please do not get one just to control your pest problem. They are extremely intellegent creatures and need and deserve love, care and committment and should not just be used and thrown away! What's the efficient way to kill rats? Will cats work?
Rats can be too big and tough for a cat to kill. either get a psycho evil cat, or a big dog
Animals MUST have a rabies shot before hand.
Cats work
Keeping some cats around will drive the rats out.
cats would work but I would ask if the cat is a good mouser or not. I got a cat from the Humane society for the same reason you did and she is just the laziest cat ever and doesnt catch anything. On the good side though, i fell in love with her and kept her anyway, but she is a horrible mouser lol If that doesnt work, try leaving out coca cola. Rats cant burp and they will drink the cola and die because they cant burp. My brothers used to do that to the rats for fun. Or you could leave out chewing gum because they cant digest it and will die from it. Good luck
Rat poison and plug the holes. You are most likely killing rats but new ones are moving in.
well, we had mice until we got a cat. then we never saw another one ever again.
dont do cats! Please just call the local shelter of animal service sothey can profestionally take them out. PLEASE!!!!! DONT MAKE CATS EAT THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Please don`t put cats in there as the rats may have a disease! Call a exterminator......
I agree with gypsy cat.
Terriers are bred to kill rats.
you could have used a cat but you used posin which means if the cat eats the rat it will die a slow sad death or hundreds of dallors of vet bills.
Cats aren't normally able to kill full-grown rats: they can be huge. I'd be more inclined to get a small terrier-type dog like a Jack Russell, as they are bred for this sort of thing.
The poisons usually take a couple of days to work. Have you tried any of the humane traps?
Yes,the cats will work, but understand after you used the poison,if the cat eats the rat,it will be poisoned too. But most of the time, they will just kill it and bring it to you.
CATS WILL WORK BUT KNOW THIS WHEN CATS KILL THEIR PRAY, THEY ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO THE MASTER.
depending on cats, they can catch them for you or not. some cats are really vigilant about things that move and they catch, kill it, or play with it. some cats don't really care much for things like that. we have two cats. one cat can hunt lizards, birds and such. the other is kinda lazy and spoiled and really don't care for those things.
most cats will catch and kill mice/rats. sometimes rats can get almost as big as the cat though...so if you want to get a cat just to kill your rodents, i would think carefully about it first. are you willing to take care of the cats?? if not call a peat control guy to help you instead.
