Can rats really chew through anything?

i've heard that before somewhere and i just read that rats chewed off an infant's toes in Ohio. Can rats really chew through anything?
How does this pertain to cats? Can rats really chew through anything?
Just to comment on #666 post - there has never been a single reported incident of a cat smothering a baby. It was considered a possible risk, but has never actually happened - urban legend!

I've had rats in the past and kept them in a large wire bird cage. One of the rats actually chewed through some of the bars!! I've also heard of rats chewing through nails- and since mine chewed through the bars of a bird cage, I don't doubt it!
Where were the adults while this poor baby was screaming? I just can't imagine that at all.

Yes, rats can, and will, chew through anything except metal. We had 2 as pets and they were complete escape artists. Nothing was safe. They were sweet as could be though. They knew their names, would come when called, but chewed up anything they could if allowed to.
yea they can chew through pretty much anything, cept for metal. my rats would chew up those kong dog toys with no effort and anything else i would put in the cage would get totally destroyed.
No, they cant.

They may be able to chew through flesh, but thats about it.

I mean, a rat cant chew through diamond can it???
yes they can! rats and mice are drawn to babies as they have a sweet smell which is down to the milk they drink! but yes rats will eat even a dead body!
Cats smother new born babies. I am not surprised they chew toes off either. They are horrible animals.
