How on earth do rats, cockroaches,and ants come inside homes?

How how how??? I have know Idea. My house is locked like a fortress and I had mice in my laundry room, and found a cockroach in my bathroom. I keep a clean house, but sometimes it gets a lil messy, but not enough to attract mices and other things.How on earth do rats, cockroaches,and ants come inside homes?
Mice and rats can compress themselves so as to fit through extremely small openings - extremely small. The mouse you found was probably a field mouse, they get in all the time, and especially like the warmth of the house and the nibbles they find.

Cockroaches are delivered into the house via groceries and paper products, pant cuffs, purses, lunch containers, etc, from places you and yours have been.

Ants get in because they are tiny and you can't really seal up a house that well - there are pipes, and cracks and little holes in every house.

Rats and mice have the ability to dislocate every bone in their body. They can actually squeeze themselves under a door, you know the space between the bottom of the door and the floor, through cracks in your roof or foundation (they can also climb walls). So I would check the outside of your home and fill ALL cracks and holes, no matter how small. I'm not an expert, but you should buy that expanding insulating foam for all the cracks you may find outside. You local hardware store can probably tell you more about that stuff.

I recently read a story on CNN's website about a bat problem in Georgia and bats can actually squeeze themselves through a hole the size of a dime. So don't underestimate rodents.
mice can fit in a hole or gap the size of a dime.....ants are almost impossible to keep out onless you treat the entire exterior of your home..and roaches are the nastiest bug around they breed like crazy and grocery stores or any outlet we purchase food items...they esp love the cardboard boxes and the glue on them at the stores and once you get them they are hard to get rid of..
A clue may be when you wrote it ';gets a little messy.';

those critters can find the slightest crumb left around. I would advise being a bit more diligent in washing dishes or rising them and keeping garbage at a minimum. At one time I was not careful about getting boxes from the grocery store for packing and moving and discovered some guests in them.

This may be a problem best handled by a professional exterminator for your peace of mind. Good luck.
Lol. Well, they have their own sneaky, tricky ways to enter our homes. Either they find ways or make them for themselves. Well, roaches are everywhere and I believe you can't stop them. Rats though can still be prevented; maybe you make a double check of your house for other possible passages the the rats may use or passages that they possibly made. As for roaches, well, they give birth to numerous little ';roachies'; like hell. They say that if you saw just a roach in your house, there are other 100 or 1000 more. Just always make sure that your house is cleaned every week. It may not stop them, but it can help prevent them from turning your house into a critterville.
air vents, cracked windows, open doors, holes, light sockets, etc.
The same way Mother-in-Laws get in !! Evil Magic !!

Seriously... they sneak in where your pipes come thru the floor... tiny cracks where the wall meets the floor... thru drain pipes...

Mice are coming in NOW probably because winter is approaching and they love a nice warm laundry room.
they can squezze i found a rat in my rabbit cage it squeexed through the 1/4 inch openings my dog got mad for it scaring my rabbit that it ate it get a dog dogs like them they say cats do but mine doesnt my dog is like a cat and my cat a dog keep it clean hire preople.
Mice can fit in a hole the size of a dime and they will wait by a door(warmth).and come into to your fortress. Cockroaches can be brought home on/in a bag,soda cans, potatoes. T.P., or someone that came to visit you (that has a problem)gave them to you. Ants are looking for food.
