A common thing with rats is that apart from the obvious health risks from having a dirty cage rats do not like dirty environments and if they have gone to the toilet round the cage they will get to a point where they will not go anymore and this can lead to a lot of problems with the stomach as they get constipation quite easily.
Rats are proud animals and enjoy a clean environment. Why do rats need a very clean cage?
Our pet rats have a thing in them called mycoplasmosis. It is constantly attacking their immune system and if the rat is stressed (dirty cage with lots of ammonia from urine) or ill, the myco will let another secondary infection flare up. Most times this is a URI (upper respiratory infection) where you will need to go to the vets to get antibiotics.
Prevention is the best policy, and a clean cage, good food, lots of exercise, a companion, and fresh water can all help prevent these problems.
Wild rats die young, an average lifespan for a wild rat is 12 months old, so they really do not ';live very well';.
in rats wee is ammonia, so too much can make them ill.
Hi! What you are saying is right about rats living in drains.
But those wild rats do not live very long at all!
Pet rats need clean cages because it makes them very ill and unhealthy. If they have a respiratory disease they will die a lot sooner. Try to always keep a rats cage clean also because of the poo and stuff. Rats like to make a mess with food, and eventually it is very messy and smelly and your rat will hate living that way. Good Luck!!!
