Well, at least we know SOME people on the Y!A community don't actually read the content within the question, or else they would know that you are for the rats and not against them.
What grade are you in? If your teacher is making you watch animals eating eachother and your classmates and yourself are still in Elementary school, then I would report him to the office, because that's not something young children need to see. Actually, it's nothing that any humane person (no matter what age) would enjoy watching.
I agree with you that rats are precious and misunderstood. People who say mean things (mostly) about rats do not talk from experience, but rather stereotypes that are completely fictional. I do not speak from experience, but I do have a love for rats and their unique ways.Who else thinks that rats are disgusting?
My cousin does. She really hate rats. You will be never able to explain her how cute and clever they are. And if you compare them to cats. She would definitely think that you are nuts.
I don't think rats are discusting but ever since I owned my own I developed a bit of a phobia of them - mine bit me all the time! :( I am really sad about it because people say they are very nice pets usually.
unfortunately... a snake's gotta eat... and a rat is what they naturally thrive for. Hopefully he feeds the rats to him dead though?
I think rats are adorable!! I just don`t get it, when someone takes one look at a rat they go ';ewww disgusting';. There isn`t anything distgusting about a rat. I think there tail is very pleasnt. If you actually spent time with a rat you would full in love with the little creatures. They like people so why wont we like them!! I bet all the people out there who dont like rats haven`t ever stroked one or was ever near one.
Why would your teacher show that in class? I wouldn't want to see that either.
i think Rats are one of the best small pets anyone one can have, they are very intelligent and if you handle them very regular they get attached, i had a boy and a girl , the boy got loose and we found him in the girls cage ( don't ask how ) so hey presto few weeks later we had 16 of them we found homes for all but kept mum and dad until they died and i sure did miss the girl( Candy ) she used to sit on my shoulder while i hoovered she'd sit and watch TV with me, she went shopping with me a couple of times , the boy ( Leo ) was my daughters and he went every where with her i think they got a bad name because of sewer rats , tame ones are very clean none of mine ever done their pee's and poops out side their cages and they only used one corner of the cage, now tell me they are dirty, cleaner than some humans !!
I think they are disgusting but in a cute way.
Domesticated rats with all their shots are cute, but not if they're in your house! Yuck!
i dont like rats. they are nasty. they carry diseases. the only good rat is a dead one.
Rats are sooooo digusting. I agree with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No offense to anyone here, I can completely sympathize if you have had rats infesting your home, but if you haven't, if all you have heard is that rats are disgusting time and again, take a step back.
Rats are highly intelligent creatures, and DO NOT carry diseases if they are domesticated. Of course all animals in the wild have the potential to carry diseases, but that doesn't stop old people feeding pigeons in the parks now does it? And pigeons are -dare I say- filthier than rats, which spend a third of their lives cleaning themselves.
To all who ';hate'; rats because of their bad rep, try to have an open mind. People house guinea pigs, ferrets, hamsters, gerbils and mice and nobody whines about how disgusting they can be. I would sooner have rats than any of those other pets.

Watch the movies Willard and Ben, then see if you don't change your mind.
I don't, I have 11. All are rescues =)
But I also have snakes, which do feed on mice and rats. What can you do? Snakes have just as much of a right to eat as rats, or people. You just need to accept that fact. And I of course keep it as humane as possible. They're killed with gas (painlessly). I hate when people feed them live.
I also think most people that claim to hate them, never actually met a happy, friendly (like they should be), curious ratty. And people who still trace them to diseases haven't been updated with any current events for the past few decades. I have had dozens of people change their mind on the matter after playing with my rats, and seeing just how interactive and intelligent they are. The fact is, appearence is appearence, but their behaviour is one of greatest qualities in any pets, to me at least.
Edit: If he is ignorant enough to feed them live, try to inform him that it's not only very inhumane to the rats, it is actually putting his snake at great risk of getting injured or even killed. All animals are capable of a lot of harm when in desperation. Plus, it's just not nice for them to die slowly.
I have to disagree. I HATE rats with a passion. My little sister got bit by one when we lived in brooklyn and she stayed in the hospital alot. If I ever saw a rat I'd stomp the **** of it!!! But either than that yea rats are pretty cool.
i have nothing against rats they have a great personality but...their tails freak me out and thats why i cant keep them as a rat
I own both rats AND snakes, and I do feed live to my snakes. Its something that I know has to be done. I could feed frozen to the one, but the other one is a rescue and hasn't accepted frozen from us yet because of his previous owners negligence in feeding him completely still frozen rats (or attempting to).
I love rats, they're social, intelligent, loving animals, but they are part of the natural diet of most snakes. If you really want to do something about it, find an article on why frozen pre-killed prey is a better, safer choice for most reptile owners than feeding live. A live rat can wound or even kill a snake if fed when its not hungry. But just don't get upset over it because the rat has to die, it is part of the food chain and the snake deserves to eat too. You can possibly change your teachers ways by researching it and presenting an adult argument into why he should feed pre-killed versus the live, it might get you extra credit at least.
I wouldn't want to touch one, but I do think they're kinda cute in their own way. I agree that it's sick that your teacher is feeding rats to his snake right in front of you guys.
I hate them they are filthy vermin
I can think better things to hate,on the other side of the border.
rats were here first, and they don't protest, steal, ask for anything free. rats look ok now dont' they ?
Shes a sucky teacher.
Feeding an innocent rat to a snake just
for pleasure and entertainment.
If she was trying to make it educational,
she shouldve just drew a picture or something.
i do
I love rats, used to have one as a pet. He used to ride on my shoulder when i went for walks
although i did have pets snakes which i fed other rats....circle of life and all that
Rats are wondeful little creaures. The domesticated ones are sweet and loving, and I kinda admire the wild ones for they're ingenuity and ability to adapt. I mean, we've come so close to obliterating so many species, but the rats are still doing great!
Also, are the rats your science teacher is feeding live? That can be dangerous for the snake as well as cruel. Some rats may fight back.
Apart from that, it's sick to force people to watch animals eat each other. You shouldn't have to see something like that if you do not want to. Tell your science teacher to keep the snake feeding for after class.
I just recently got myself some rats started off with 5 now the lady is totally getting out of the business so my husband and I opted to go and take them all...Rats are very intelligent and sadly always being compared to wild rats. Domesticated Rats are very clean animals its not unusual for them to clean themselves at least 5-6 times a day like a cat does (mine even clean themselves after I touch them). Most people dont even realize these rats can be taught tricks and all and u can even get them to recognize their names and come when called and enjoy being cuddled just like a cat or dog. They love attention and when excited will grind their teeth to show they appreciate ur love... I know its the way of life but I couldnt watch no one feeding one of my precious little babies who are sooo smart to an ugly snake.
If you like rats so much then make sure that you dont eat any chinese food in NYC.
