Could the smoke from my fireplace hurt my two rats?

They are maybe a few months old, both female.

The fireplace is in the other room, but I can smell something smoky from here quite clearly.

One of my rats already seems to have a bit of a respiratory issue, and I'm worried this could make her sick.

Also, I've put my fan on since I' noticed her acting a little strange.Could the smoke from my fireplace hurt my two rats?
The smoke could well be harmful for them yes.

You maybe need to check the flue on your fireplace or get the chimney swept to stop the smoke seeping around the rest of the house.

Using a fan in the room where the rats are wouldn't be making much difference, you are just blowing the same air around! You could get yourself an air purifier for the room where the rats are kept, that would clean the air around the rats and make it more safe for them (and yourself!).

I would also advise you to get your rats checked over by a qualified vet experienced with rats if you are seeing signs of respiratory distress.Could the smoke from my fireplace hurt my two rats?
Hi!

Smoke aggravates our lungs so yes, it will aggravate your rattys lungs, too. If your rats are not directly exposed to the smoke I wouldn't be worried too much - as long as they are not exposed to the smoke (they can only smell it) it shouldn't cause major issues.

If your rat has a respiratory issue, then you must get her to the vets straight away for a course of antibiotics - Baytril is the usual antibiotic prescribed but with your rats being so young, your vet may prescribe an alternate. :)

Good luck!
I would be very careful about it yeah. Rats are very prone to respiratory issues. That and cancer are the leading causes of death in rats. Also be careful of the fan and what it does to the quality of air in the room. Long story short if you can smell smoke clearly it is probably harmful to your rats. Best move them to another room.

Hope this helps
Rats have a very high rate of getting sick from the upper respiratory system. They are born with the upper respiratory disease. And things like stress, maybe smoke, could trigger it. I've had two rats die because of this disease. Since she's acting weird, I would move the cage immediately!
